The period from Wei Dynasty (220B.C.) to Northern and Southern Dynasty (581B.C.) is critical to the development of Chinese linguistics. During the period, Chinesewords had been converted from monosyllabic words to polysyllabic words especiallyto disyllabic words owing to the Chinese translation of sutra, which includes a largeamount of colloquial words and reflects the real situation of language usage in thatperiod. Therefore, the translation is important for the study of the period. The Chinese translation of Sarvastivada-vinaya is important because of itstypical language. This dissertation includes six chapters. The first chapter is an introduction. It gives a brief introduction toSarvastivada-vinaya and its translator, its present study, its importance and otherexplanations. The second chapter is a survey of glossaries and a study of Buddhist glossary. The author groups Buddhist glossary into ten categories and analyses itscharacteristics. The third chapter is a study of general words. General words can be divided intoold words and new words, among which new words and their new meanings are thefocus of study. The author analyses the word formation of new words and comparesthem with modern Chinese words. The fourth chapter is a study of inverse morpheme words. The existence of ahuge amount of inverse morpheme words in the period shows that the then Chinesedisyllabic words did not enjoy a high degree of fixing, while their vanishing frommodern Chinese reflects the economy of language. The fifth chapter is a study of different characters. The study of differentcharacters is of great significance to the study of both sutra and linguistics. The sixth chapter is a discussion of the roles of glossaries of Sarvastivada-vinayain the editing of Chinese dictionaries, such as adding entries, meanings and examples. The last chapter is conclusions.
