On the basis of a wide collection of the word forms for illness symptoms on bamboo slips and silks, this paper makes a preliminary study of the illness symptom characters on bamboo slips and silks from the two aspects of the use of words and their annotations. In the former, the paper mainly resorts to synchronic description while making historical comparisons; it examines the phenomena of Yigou, Tongjia, Yixie and Tongxing, expounds their features, summarizes the rules, and sums up common examples. In the latter, this paper uses the same methods as were used for verifying and explaining ancient writing and the features for the illness symptoms and laws that are revealed in this paper, refers to the documents handed down from ancient times, particularly illness symptom information of lager ages, and combs and annotates those names of illness symptoms which bore different explanations in the verification and explanation of the bamboo slips and silks in Chu, Qin, and Han dynasties.
