It came into being in the 1970s to reflect the development and evolvement of western music history from the view of feminism, as a new academic trend in American musicology, it was deeply influenced by feminist movements and feminism academic thoughts as well. Having developed steadily for nearly 40 years, feminist music criticism have been a hot topic in American musicology, thus contributing to considerably abundant results of relevant research. The birth of feminism music criticism have transfused new content and dynamism into traditional musicology, and caused great impact. Today, Gender theory, the core concept originated from feminism has become a common analysis mode in modern research.Though Feminism and Gender study has been enjoying an increasing vigorous development in international academic field, it is still relatively strange to Chinese musicology. Since the 1990s, some domestic scholars have tried giving some piecemeal introduction about the development of feminist music criticism, and attempted to do some academic research from the view of feminism. However, up until now, the mainstream of music academic field still know little about feminism, let alone feminism and gender research, which hasn't gained common recognition in domestic musicology. Aimed at thinking over the contribution and loss of feminist music criticism, this essay is trying offering a rational thought on the achievements made in feminism music critics of western music research so as to present the female and relevant marginalized phenomena in music research to Chinese people.
