Ever since Three Kindgoms, a chinese vernacular novel, was introduced into Japan in Edo Era, it was constantly translated, imitated, and recreated. Meanwhile, the novel and Japanese culture influenced each other, which more than once caused the fever of Three Kingdoms across the Japanese literary world and the further research of the novel. Recently, with the more emphasis on the Sinology overseas, some Chinese scholars have already noticed the translation and research of this novel in Japan. They either have studied different version of translation in lexicological terms, or have studied the translation in terms of the relationship between Chinese and Japanese cultre. Also, some Chinese scholars just translated the latest research of Three Kingdoms in Japan to Chinese readers. On the basis of summarizing all the past research, this dissertation is not only making the historical and specific generalization and analysis of the translation, recreation and research of Three Kingdoms in Japan, but also is tryng to explore the regularity and particularity of the cultural exchange between Chinese and Japan.Aparting from emphasis on both the theoretical research and case study, this dissertation will discuss the following questions externally and internally based on the researchs of comparative literature, cross-culture and translation theories. Firstly, this dissertation will makes a diachronic research on the translation and recreation of Three Kingdoms since Edo Period so as to find the reasons for the popularity of the novel through the different characteristics in different period, to grasp the relation of this novel and politics, economy, culture and literature at that time, and to analyze the fate correctly of this novel in Japan. Secondly, in the course of Three Kingdoms' being translated and recreated, we can find these writers, from the standpoint of Japanese culture, left a strong Japanese imprint on the choice, reconstruction, rebuilding and rebirth of this novel. Thirdly, as the fever of Three Kingdoms keeps heating up, Japanese scholars put more and more attention to its criticism and research. The findings of Japanese scholars'research take on three features:the first is Japanese scholars always make the research from the standpoint of its own culture while keeping a watchful eye on the related research in China; the second is the great enthusiam for textual criticism; the last is the digging of new materials, which usually leads to a series of new research achievements. This dissertation attaches importance to the new perspectives and new concept in criticizing and studying Three Kingdoms.Revolving around the above-mentioned thinking, this dissertation tries to discuss Japanese translation and research of Three Kingdoms in ten chapters (including introduction). The first six chapters are centered on translation and recreation during different times to intensively study the cultural filtering, time characteristics, Japanese feelings, and the process for this ancient Chinese vernacula novel to become a modern general read in Japan. Chapter seven and eight put emphasis on the research of characters and different versions to explain the popularization and Japanization of this novels'research in Japanese literary world. In short, from the perspective of the history of Sino-Japan cultural relationship, this dissertation is systematically carding, criticize and study the relationship between Three Kingdoms and Japanese literature and culture to explore the track of Sino-Japan cultural exchanges by using the methods in comparative literary and culture.
