The Klong Chen Snying Thig preliminary practices of Dzogchen Tibetan Buddhism is the most circulated practical teaching method of Nyingma sect in Tibet Buddhism. It belongs to the most-high Mantra system—"Bright Dzogchen Dharma", and it is one of the over-all systematical methods--"Klong Chen Snying Thig" which is founded by'Jigs Med Gling Pa and is a kind of specific and basic method of Esoteric Buddhism.According to the Tibetan Buddhism tradition, Vajrayana sects have been viewed as more profound and advanced than Exotoric sects. But the Vajrayana methods are offered only to those most talented practitioners. It means that the rank and file neither accept and understand it, nor can they practice it. Therefore, the ordinary people have to promote their talents through various methods before they become fit to practice the Vajrayana methods and allowed to do it. Unlike to those in Gelukpa sect, practitioners in Nyingma and other sects need not to spend months or even years to study Exotoric scriptures, before they are allowed to study the Vajrayana methods. What they need to do is only to finish the practical course of the preliminary practices and then after, they can start to study other Vajrayana methods. At the same time, the Nyingma sect insist that the Dzogchen Klong Chen Snying Thig preliminary practices is in this system of traditional methods a compulsory course for those new comers to the temple. It means, through the practice of this Klong Chen Snying Thig preliminary practices, the practitioner is no more a stranger to Buddhism, but become a vessel of Dharma in the Vajrayana practical system because he (she) has already equipped with some good qualifications for Buddhism study. To explore how this change is possible, and what kind of qualifications can this practices supply in training those Vajrayana practitioners, this dissertation is a outcome of research on these problems. It consists of three parts:first chapter, an introduction, then, the main body of dissertation extended in seven chapters, and at last, the conclusion.Chapter one is an introduction about the significance, the historical origin, the lineage mechanism, the scripture and it's contend, the learning and practical method of Klong Chen Snying Thig preliminary practices in Nyingma Buddhism system. The key point is about the "two kinds of motivations" as two main veins in the whole teaching and learning system. That is the reason why Klong Chen Snying Thig preliminary practices has demonstrated in the very beginning a kind of characteristics of both Mahayana Buddhism and Vajrayana tradition. Then is the main body of my dissertation. It will go according to the order of the Klong Chen Snying Thig preliminary practices and provide analysis on every concrete issue successively.Chapter Two presents an outcome of study and research work on the basic method of "Four Thoughts That Turn The Mind":treasure the leisure time and the fulfillment, think about the transience life, think about the samsara of fault and suffering, and think about the karma. According to Tibetan Buddhism tradition, this "Four Thoughts That Turn The Mind" practice is a preparation for renouncing the secular world, and the renouncing mind is the basic condition for into Buddhist salvation which is the very goal of the religious practitioner. In this dissertation, the author will give an analysis of the "Four Thoughts That Turn The Mind" with the freedom and fate theory of the Western existentialism and explain it as a kind of cognition about the living state and the existential predicament. And at the same time, the author has also pointed out that the four mind-returns is a treat of the ego-gripping of the Buddhist practitioner. The content of Chapter Three is an analysis of the practical method of "conversion" which is the basic foundation of all the Buddhist practices. In this teaching practices, the foundation of conversion is on the motivation of Mahayana Buddhism and at the same time, it is also combined with the Vajrayana visions of conversion. This dissertation raises an assertion that the conversion is in appearance relied on the three-treasures of Buddhist, Dharma and Monk, but in the essence level, it is relied on the Buddha nature of the soul and the key point is on faith cultivating.Chapter Four presents an analysis of the practice of "raising up the Bodhi-citta" which is the essence and key note of Mahayana Buddhism. In the former phase, the practitioner had finished the course of "Relative Bohdi-citta". This dissertation has an analysis on the reason of the "Absolute Bodhi-citta" and its goal. The author has pointed out that this phase of practice is characterized by the transition of experiences in the mind of the practitioner.Chapter Five presents an analysis of "Vajrasattva chanting", Mandala supplying, and "Kus'ali". On the whole, these three methods definitely belong to the Vajrayana practice because they use a lot of symbols to express the true meaning, use the method of pure-vision to strengthen the faith. Similar to the practice of Bohdichitta Mind, it is also a treat of "ego-gripping."Chapter Six presents an analysis on the teaching of Guru Yoga which is the last, and at the same time the most important method of the preliminary practices. Because it does not only convergence all the former practices in itself, but also concentrate all the former phases of practice in itself. In this level, the process of resolution of ego-gripping, the process of wisdom developing, and the process of utmost piety to the Lama are united. At last, this dissertation use the conclusion chapter to sum up and systemize the all the analysis and understanding about the Klong Chen Snying Thig preliminary practices. It claim that this teaching practices emphasizes on cultivation of the "faith root" of the practitioner and it aims to train and convert the new comer of Buddhist practice into a kind of "Dharma vessel" and make it possible to experience the Master Yoga practice. This dissertation is in itself an academic breakthrough and innovation because it is in the first time a wholly and systematically research on Klong Chen Snying Thig preliminary practices of Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It has not only given a concrete and detailed explain and analysis to every teaching method, but also has concluded the essential characteristics of the preliminary practices as a whole, and has pointed out where is the possibility for the ordinary men to be trained and cultivated into a qualified Vajrayana practitioner. These are the achievements of this dissertation. And besides the aforementioned achievement, the dissertation has a bold innovation in the way of exegesis. It has applied to some concepts of Western existential philosophy and psychology, such as "destiny","liberty" in the writings of Paul Tillich and Rollo May, to enhance the interpretation of "leisurable fullness " and "karmar" in Tibetan Buddhism and try to apply the "free-destiny" dialectical explanation mold as a untraditional exegesis to "Four Thoughts That Turn The Mind"And in the meantime, the author has also compared the meditation theme "Life is transient" in this Buddhist method with German philosopher Heidegger's existentialism concept of "death", has pointed out the similarity and connection between them and has also given an analysis on the boundary and differences between them.
