The dissertation focuses on collage skill and style characteristic of typical works of Charles Edward Ives, a famous American composer of modern western music in the20th century, by combining classical documents of Ives abroad with the latest research achievements of our country. The author studies the inspiration, intention, specific form and aesthetic characteristics of the composer so as to summarize the basic style of collage skill. The author also analyzes the concrete structure of collage skill, in order to reveal significance of the skill in composer's concept and style. What this dissertation wants to explore is the space-time context and aesthetics connotation of collage skill, and finally tries to explain the cultural origin of the skill from the macroscopic vision of the time that Ives lived.The dissertation consists of introduction, four chapters and conclusion. In the introduction part, it mainly introduces the gist and signification of the topic, main content, and methods of research. Chapter one summarizes Ives's time and biography, his music language and style and concept. Chapter two presents basic situation and general characteristics of collage skill by collecting its historical origin and developments and analyzing several typical works of Ives. In chapter three, the author mainly discusses technical features and style characteristics of collage skill, and its relation with other avant-garde composing skills of the composer. The chapter four, from perspective of culture and social background, which talks about the relation between collage skill of Ives and transcendentalism, national cultural concepts of America and social condition and religion of20th century, finally discovers complicated musical aesthetic ideology and art concepts contained in collage skill of the composer. In the conclusion, from both technique and concept, the significance of collage skill of composer's works is expounded. The author thus indicates the historic status of collage skill in the process of composition development of the20th century and its necessity in the cultural context of the20th century America.
