In the early Republic of China, Beijing's painting circle was classified as the "Traditional School". It is an indisputable fact that the artistic intentions of " Borrowing from the ancient" of Chinese painting artists, and the regional painting style presented a different appearance from the "Shanghai School" and "Lingnan School", although the phrase of "traditional school" is a concept named nowadays. The current researches initially defined the meaning of "Borrowing from the ancient". But for the historical reasons of this phenomenon, they were more about an explanation based on painters, artworks and painting theories. While all the explanations implied a assumption—their traditional artistic attainments drove the formation of Beijing painters'regional art styles.Based on the detailed description of history, this thesis provides a more comprehensive interpretation of the formation of Beijing's regional painting style from three respects:painters'status, lives and the market. The change of political system in modern China leaded to the change of painters'status. The mixture of various identities of painters showed a remarkable amount of historical appearences. The different living conditions of painters with various identities truly reproduced their inner worlds. Art market, the important media to disseminate the artworks, initially formed in the early Republic of China with prominent regional characteristics. Painters with different identities showed different attitudes in the art market. As a united System, the identities, lives of painters plus the art market effected the forming of Beijing's regional painting style.Rather than a definite automatic direction and goal based on what all the logic behaved in a certain route, the development of history is full of occasionalities of details. In other words, the inevitability maybe exists in a long period which is drove by the gradation of a large amount of accidental details. To reappear this scene in the early Republic of China is what this thesis for.
