In the history of Chinese modern art, Dong Xiwen's art career outstands as a single example of its kind.Dong Xiwen was born and brought up in a family richly indulged in traditional Chinese culture, whereas he chose oil painting as his life career later in his youth. As a student, Dong was out of his fellow people by keeping himself well distanced from the art trends at that time. As an artist, he had never been abroad learning and experiencing in oil painting. After the well-acclaimed Founding Ceremony, he still explored various styles of painting to realize his pursuit for nationalized oil painting. In1950's, along with himself, Dong tried to correct the misunderstanding of the Russian art. Even in his incurable illness in the time of the Culture Revolution, he still had his faith in the eminence of a Chinese characterized oil painting style. By these, Dong Xiwen and his works are a milestone in the history of Chinese modern art.Out of pure reverence, I did this research and finished the dissertation. The whole article is consisted of three parts, and there are five chapters in part two. In the first part, an elaborate discussion is centered on the academic researches, which are relevant to this essay. For each of the five chapters in part two, there are questions discussed separately yet accordingly with the forming and development of Dong's idea. All of these chapters are formed and elaborated with the line of origin and development of Dong's art philosophy. This article aims to stream out in analyzing those issues in a coherent manner. The third part works as a conclusion, trying to give out the possibilities of Dong's influence on Chinese art and its contemporary development. At present, with the wide recognition of the idea "traditional culture is one of the most important part of a nation's soft power", a thorough research on Dong as an artist of his kind out of his fellow men along with his ideal of a nationalized art philosophy is a necessity without any doubt.
