Wang's family of Linchuan was a typical literary family in thesouthern literature in the Song Dynasty. It has been an admiration for its vigourand its fruitful cultural products. It played a very important role in the cultural transition from the Song to the Tang, as a result it is of high degree of cultural significance. Wang Anshi enjoyed a prominent position in the Song culture and literature and his influence was widespread in various scientific fields. In the meanwhile he was one of the most controversial figure in the literary history. The controversies undoubtedly made him one of the most complicated and the most sophisticated cultural figure in the Song cultural history. This study consists of two sections with regard to Wang Anshi as well as the culture and literature of his family with the focus on Wang Anshi. The first section concerns an overall study of Wang's family of Linchuan. It encompasses a range of topics concerned with the transferring, flourishing and declining of Linchuan Wang's family, inheritance of the generations, cultural traditions and cultural achievements. It also put anemphasis on the lives of the main family members and their cultural exchange activities. The second section is a case study of Wang Anshi's poetics. It presents an in-depth theoretical summary of diffusion of Wang Anshi's poems, deciphering pseudograph, compiling of anon poems by Wang Anshi as well as the theoretical critique of his poems. This study strikes a balance between the macro structure and analyses at the macro level. It integrates traditional approaches to literary and historical studies with new Chinese and western theories and approaches. A wide range of relevant issues are discussed.
