Centering around five points, the thesis tries to explore the spiritual world of the novels in Taiwan modernist school, expressing arduous self construction as well as identified anxieties prevalent in contemporary Taiwan Intellectuals.We are first to discuss: existentialism is an alient cultural trend populous in Taiwan in 1960s, arousing deep sympathy among the young educated people. Due to the need of self spiritual construction, novelists of Taiwan modernist school assimilate philosophy thoughts of existentialism from different ways. Secondly, we hold that romanticism is a spiritual realm in the novels of Taiwan modernist school often ignored, which do embody in the literary ideas of Literature Magazine and Modern Literature. It also reflects in the novels of Wang Shang-yi and Qi Deng-sheng 0 Thirdly, we deem that novels of Taiwan modernist school have the trait of melting psychoanalysis into body narration, describing its brink, frail and lonely features. Fourthly, the religious hint in the novels of Taiwan modernist school are neglected by the researchers before. We argue that, as a matter of fact, novelist of Taiwan modernist school seek for their value convertion through language practice, aesthetic ideals and religious belief. Finally, the novelists of Taiwan modernist school probe into the difficult position of existence, we are to discuss their language experiment showing the features of miscallaneousness and purity.To express more clearly, the thesis not only quotes the theories relating to the cultural study of modernism, romanticism and existentialism.The creativity of the thesis embodies in the following three aspects.1 .The thesis chooses the important literary phenomena, figures as well as novels neglected by researchers before as objects of study.2.The thesis explores the self-identification construction of Taiwan Intellectuals, which is a relatively new angle.3.The thesis discusses the pluralistic features of modern consciousness, opening up a new field for the researchers .
