The subject of my research is the classical-form poetry created from 1917 to 1946, which is called "modern classical-form poetry" in my thesis. "Modern" here is only a temporal concept, not referring to the characteristics of "modernistic" and "modernity".With the establishment of the new literature tradition, modern classical-form poetry have been gradually expelled form the mainstream discourse. Within the cognitive framework of "Chinese modern literature", the spiritual and aesthetic values of the classical-form poetry have not received the deserved respect, and even worse, the actual existence of them has been ignored. As a matter of fact, after the May 4th Movement in 1919, quite a lot of people were engaged in the creation of the classical-form poetry, and the activities relevant to the classical-form poetry were very rich, which was quite beyond our imagination. As a "disappearing phenomenon" in the history of Chinese modern literature, the classical-form poetry can offer a lot of significant questions concerning the modern literature and culture for discussion. In terms of the ideological ideas, the classical-form poetry are a reflection of the modern Chinese people's complex spiritual world, and their life experiences and spiritual interests which are abandoned by the modern "new literature", the revelation of which will be helpful to our full comprehension of the spirits of modern china, and will provide the basis for our re-thinking on "modernity" and "modern literature". At the artistic level, the aesthetic elements hidden in the classical-form poetry still have its values in the trend of "modernization". From the angle of its writing, the writing of classical-form poetry is different from the creation of "new literature". The study of it will do .goods to our understanding of the traditional form of creation, its pressure met in modern china, and the significance of its existence. This thesis is divided into four parts. Chapter 1 is about the cultural contexts of the classical-form poetry. The author holds that in the old and new age, there exist a lot of poets who have the ability to create classical-form poetry, who form the sources of the production of classical-form poetry. However, the creation of classical-form poetry is restrained by the cultural contexts of the time. The conflicts between classical-form poetry and new poems in the Wu-Si period are a reflection of the complicated relationships between the "traditional" and the "modern". This chapter aims at the representation of the vagueness between them through the description of the ignored conflicting details. The factor of "nationality" has always been influencing the Chinese writers' creation. Since classical-form poetry are bearers of the information of "nationality" and repositories of the imagination of "nationality", this chapter briefly expounds the influence of the creation of classical-form poetry in terms of national cultural recognition and national dangers. At the level of language, the conflicts between Chinese classical language and modern language are another context of the creation of classical-form poetry. This chapter also describes the functions of Chinese classical language in Chinese writers' creation, and the thinking ways that are influenced by its use.Chapter 2 is about the cultural recognition of the two colonies who create classical-form poetry: safeguarding poets and nostalgic poets. After the new cultural movement, the creation of classical-form poetry met challenges. Among the safeguarding poets, some abided by the norm ofclassical-form poetry firmly, while some made flexible alterations. The different choices of the two groups of people indicate that they have different danger consciousness and adaptive abilities. This chapter makes an analysis of the realistic reasons of their creation, and the identities and cultural recognition reflected in their creation. The nostalgic poets are good at both the creation of new and old literature. This chapter makes an analysis of the influence of i...
