Chen Zhifo (1896-1962) is a famous modern Chinese art educator and artist of crafts and Chinese painting. This paper tries to make a case study of his thinking in art education.Firstly, the paper holds that Chen is much influenced by his time in the formation of ideas, and directed by the mainstream thoughts and rapidly developing art education in contemporary China.Secondly, it intends to divide the development of his artistic ideas into five periods based on his experience and practice in the field of art education. An analysis is made in the inheriting relations between his ideas and mainstream thinking, his views about the nature and role of art education, the relationships between art, virtue, intelligence and physical education as well as his understanding of aesthetic and art education, with a focus on his educational ideas about art of industrial crafts and pattern design teaching. His professional training and knowledge of oriental and western culture enables him to have excellent and systematic understanding of the nature, teaching and creation of industrial arts and crafts. In addition, the history and theory of his painting are discussed in this article.Lastly, the paper points out that Chen Zhifo, as an influential figure in the history of modern art and art education, has very rich and valuable pedagogical thinking. Due to the increased emphasis on fine art education in China in the 21st century, the author hopes to call great attention to the research of art history and theory through the overall investigation of Chen Zhifo' s art education ideas, which is especially important and meaningful to the current studies on design history and theories.
