In the great era of information globalization,citizens in Mainland China and Taiwan are bearingmore and more resemblance due to being nurtured by the homologicai language and cultures.People loath philistinism but fear to be outdated.They pursue identity whereas wish to belarruping.Through media,they hold latest information and define themselves;via oorisiAiYiption,they follow the mode and experience fashion.They create,spread,accept and reproduce popularcultures therefore distinguish themselves from the masses.Shanghai and Taipei are the mainstream cities in leading popular cultures on either side of thestraits.Citizens in the two cities,especially teenagers,are sensitive and vogue oriented.Toinvestigate from the angle of mass-communication studies,media undoubtedly play an impellingrole in shaping popular cultures.The issue of media and popular culture has been widely regardedin western countries.Whereas in China,studies Oil cross-regional subculture in media field arestill scarce,It is believed that a timely study on media effect will facilitate the investigation intothe Great China media market,especially in the instance of synchronous messages between thetwo sides ofthe straits.In the dissertation,the examinations on popular cultures are focused on three sections:appeance-clothes and body;entertainment-pop music and teleplay;and leisure-shoppingand travelling.A comprehensive conclusion is made after identifying and defining concepts,andmeasuring and analysing research data.
