With the end of the cold war and the bipolarity in the 20th century, there was a big change in the world, especially in the international politics. It will leave a deep mark in the progress of the human society. Military confrontation between NATO and the Warsaw Pact was the major problem in the cold war era and was a remarkable characteristic in the international politics in the later 20th century. Being a member of NATO and in the front of the western-eastern face-off, the FRG was deeply involved in this confrontation. So it carry both academic and practical values to fully understand what role the FRG played in the development of NATO. The thesis will focus on the relationship among the NATO members, their numbers and structures, their military strategy, armed forces and the locations. These directly affected the power of NATO and the situation of the confrontation with the Warsaw Pact. It even determined the winner and the loser of the confrontation. There are seven chapters in the thesis.Chapter one discusses the FRG's joining NATO. This chapter is not only the bedding of the thesis, but also one of the major topics. On the basis of discussing the processes of the rearming of the FRG, the thesis analyzes the effects on the development of NATO taken by the thing, and holds that the effects include five aspects. At the same time, by the London-Paris Agreements, the West rearmed the FRG and brought it into the defense system, and the FRG regained its sovereignty and became a member of NATO. The thesis also points out that the FRG is not equal to its allies by the limited articles of the agreements to it, which will influence the status and the roles of the FRG on the development of NATO.Chapter two discusses the FRG and the building of the common nuclear forces of NATO. While discussing the topic, the thesis takes the failure of the plan about building multilateral nuclear deterrence forces and the found of Nuclear Planning Group (NPG) as examples. The reasons about the failure of the plan are that Britain and France were to stop the FRG from taking a share of nuclear weapons. As for the FRG, its defense policy emphasized the use of nuclear forces in the course. Although trying to own nuclear weapons and join in thecontrol of them, the FRG defeated and only became a standing member of NPG On the whole, on the one hand, the failure of the plan showed that the allies still guarded against the FRG, and the status and role of the FRG in NATO was fragile internally; on the other hand, it is because the FRG made great efforts and NATO comforted the country that resulted in the found of NPG and the FRG became a standing member of the organization, which showed that the FRG enhanced its status and played a more important role.Chapter three discusses the FRG and the development of the conventional forces of NATO.
