Research Into Australian China Studies

Australian Chinese study is a kind of interdisciplinary research on China problems. Though it starts later, however, its development is very rapid. The publication of the book "China Revolution" written by Charles Patrick Fitzgerald in 1952 indicated that Australian Chinese studies began to arouse the attention from the world. That Australian National University succeeded in holding the 28th International Sinology's Meeting in January of 1971 has expanded its influence on the whole overseas educational circles of China. At present, there are at least 400 experts engaging in Chinese studies. In Australian higher institutions, who are mainly distributed in The Australian National University, The University of Melbourne, Monash University and The University of Sydney. Australian National University and Sydney University on the two research centers on China in Australia ,especially Australian National University, which has concentrated more than 40 experts on China's problems ,and which has become one of the contemporary Chinese research centers of the most overall and top level in the world. This school set up contemporary Chinese research institution in the research institute of the Pacific Ocean in 1970, which has already become the Chinese research institution with international repercussions at present. The magazine "The China Journal" hosted by the center receives good remarks by international academia. Chinese Studies Association of Australia and Asian Studies Association of Australia are the nationwide research associations ,and one academic discussion meeting held by them every two years has already become the grand meeting participated by these experts on China's study from Australia and other countries and regions in the world . In a word. Australian Chinese study has become an important branch of overseas research field on China and it should receive enough attention .But at present domestic and international study on the history of Australian Chinese study is not enough even. This article aims at having a deep and systematic investigation on Australian China studies.This article mainly investigates Australian study on China's modern and contemporary history, not involving these contents of Australian study on Chinese literature and art, law and military affairs and some others. This article divides the evolution course of Australian Chinese study into four stages according to the priority order of time: namely traditional Sinology's production, the establishment on modern Chinese study, the prosperity on Chinese study and its continual development .To every developing stage, the article takes the representative influential experts and their works on Australian Chinese study for a case study and makes a concrete analysis. At the same time, the article makes a wholesome generation and explanation on each developing course, so it links spots with areas. Draw lessons, introduction and localization are the main thread of this article, which run through the whole development course of Australian China studies.Through study, the article tries to make it clear that the basic clue of the rise,formation and development of Australian Chinese study and to delineate out the thought orbit of the development on Australian Chinese study. Through the appraisal on the experts and their masterpieces of Australian Chinese study, the article exposes the reasons and characteristics of its development, and explains its status in the whole overseas Chinese studies circles.The full article is divided into six major parts. Besides introduction, conclusion and appendix, the text is divided into four chapters altogether. The first part is the introduction, which introduces the cause of the selected title, the main purpose, structure and main content of the article.The second part introduces the starting of Australian traditional Sinology.
