As far as LaoShe is concerned, the tragedy of life comes from both human weaknesses and social structure, as well as the brand of the times. His own concern of the country and pity on the people are just formed from the background of birth and the life and emotional experiences of himself. From the very beginning of his writing career he has had this guiding ideology: to commentary on the poor. His eyes are on the lower class of the society, especially on the common people in old Beijing. In this way, he creates a large number of narrative stories full of tragedy.Besides his life experiences, one main factor that helps form his tragic style of writing is the complexity of the traditional Chinese culture and the interaction of the western culture and Chinese culture at the turning of centuries. Meanwhile, influenced by his own cultural disposition, there often emerges a kind of contradiction between sense and sensibility in his creation. Towards the Chinese traditional culture and the western civilization, LaoShe does not simply hold an opinion of which is right or which is wrong. On one hand, as a modern intellectual, he is seeking an outlet for the Chinese people from the various social and cultural malpractice in old China, on the other, he cannot really accept "the modern civilization" taking "westernization" as its symbol, because of his cultural feelings of being a child of the old China. This has its manifestation on his cartoon-like description of "the modern youth" and "modern love" and on the fact that once he tried to explore the strength for the rejuvenation of the Chinese people from the traditional idea of filial obedience and benevolence. He at times expresses his puzzle and conflict in his mutual choice and critics of the traditional culture and modern civilization, and this adds to the profundity of his works and riches the connotation of their tragedy.LaoShe is a member of the Qi people born in Beijing, and Beijing is the sea of his life and creation. The deepest impression LaoShe's works give people is those old Beijing civilians.
