Avant-garde literature has always been a hot and difficult topic in China and abroad literature academic research. It is because, to some extend the development and the future of literature are decided by the achievements of explorations of numerous avant-garde writers and their forward-looking experiments. For this reason, this paper chooses China contemporary avant-garde literature as the subject investigated, and brings this subject into the context of modernistic history. Taken the prolific theories and practices of foreign literature as reference, this paper comprehensively analyzes the inherent track of how China avant-garde literature developed into modernization and localization gradually from the rebelliousness and transcendence.The preface of the paper is focused on the origin of the concept of avant-garde and the evolution of the avant-garde genre to avant-garde literature. This section also analyzes and summarizes the basic characteristics of avant-garde literature, namely its creativeness, rebelliousness, regionality, dynamic and forward-looking characters.The first chapter of this paper review the historical context of China contemporary avant-garde literature, including its relationship with modernity, the cultural background and reasons of its generation.The second chapter goes through and outlines the historical track of the development of China contemporary avant-garde literature, namely the four important waves the key characteristics embodied by the each wave.Started from the relatively complete artistic system consisted of "subject of literary creation (writer) - artistic practice (creation) - characteristic of text (literature work), the third to fifth chapters particularly probe into the subjective spiritual characteristic, the revolutionary artistic thinking and some creative and inspirational text expression. They not only touch upon the spiritual depth, ideaistic gestures, value appeal and aesthetic pursuit of China avant-garde writer, but also include their important pioneering practices of avant-garde literature such as imagination, transcendency, metaphor and lightness, which shaped the key aesthetic traits of the contemporary avant-garde literature of China, including subjectiveness of time, the symbolization of the characters, fragmentizing of the structure and obscurity of works' strain.Coming back to the turn of the century, the sixth chapter emphatically discusses the reasons for the appearing of some crises and obstacles leading to the retrogress and stagnancy of present avant-garde literature of China, including spiritual superficiality, the weakening of independent spirit, the lack of imagination, adynamia of the experiment forms and the materials' obstacles and the lag of avant-garde literature criticism.
