Based on documents and materials and in a synthetic way, this article investigates the philosophic basis of how the concepts of beauty and ugliness in Chinese painting criticism came into been from the interpretation of "beauty"and "ugliness"in ancient China, reveals that the conception of "beauty"and "ugliness", which is a reflection of dialectical harmony, origins from the discussion of "form"and "spirit"and implicates people's recognition of "good"and "evil",gives a description and conclusion of the category of "beauty"and "ugliness"in painting appreciation and criticism, dissects the interchange and transformation of "beauty"and "ugliness"in Chinese painting criticism, analyzes the advocacy and exaggeration of "ugliness"in the painting critics in late Ming and Qing Dynasty in hopes of exploring the extension and essence of the significance of "ugliness"in Chinese painting criticism, and finally concludes the effort of exploring beauty in Chinese painting criticism in modern China. The whole article emphasizes on the origin, development, implication, characteristics and evolution of the concept of "beauty"and "ugliness"in Chinese painting criticism and gives a comprehensive evaluation of it.
