This dissertation explores the "shape and essence" theory and investigates how it was reflected in Chinese and Western artworks. By reviewing art theories and artworks in China and in the West, it analyzes and compares the viewpoints proposed by various scholars at different stages of art history. The purpose is to develop a systematic analysis of the development of "shape and essence" theory in the history of Chinese and Western art. The dissertation summarizes major similarities and differences in the development of the theory between the two cultures, and points out how the theory was implied in Chinese and Western traditional art system. It also stresses that theories from China and the West were integrated as a result of the clash between the Chinese and Western cultures.This dissertation focuses on theoretical value and its implication in the real world, as well as on art theories and their implication to the development of art practice.
