The Ambiguity Of The Modern Russian Vocabulary

This thesis completely summarized and introduced the history and present condition of research on Russian lexical meaning and Russia polysemy, omni-directionally analyzed and interpreted Russian lexical polysemy, tried to objectively, thoroughly analyze this most important semantic characteristic of natural language. The thesis investigated and summed up the regulation and mode of development of lexical meaning, analyzed the reasons and mechanism of formation of semantic structure, concluded and detected the factors, outside and inside the language, which affect the development and variety of meanings of polysemic words. At the same time, the writer expanded the realm and space in the study of polysemy with the latest research achievement in linguistics, re-explained the Russian lexical polysemy in the frame of cognitive linguistics, discussed the problems about polysemy and the solutions in the compilation of dictionary, the foreign language teaching, and the translation practice.Apart from the conclusion, the thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter systematically summed up and introduced the historical development of study of the Russian lexical meaning, main scholars and their standpoints, discussed the characteristic and the development process of Russian lexical polysemy. The second chapter analyzed the concept and main characteristic of polysemic words, explained the definition of polysemic words from the angles of relations among polysemy, monosemy andhomonymy, used the concrete examples to analyze the semantic structure of polysemic words, discussed in detail how various kinds of contexts restrict the development of polysemic words. The third chapter, from the diachronic angle, discussed the various factors that affect the development and variation of lexical polysemy, concluded the path and types of semantic shift in words, and elaborated the difference between Russian and Chinese and their racial characters. The fourth chapter re-examined and comprehended meaning and the lexical polysemy in the frame of cognitive linguistics, renewed and enlarged the dimension in the study of polysemy, carried on the cognitive analysis to the concrete Russian polysemic word. The fifth chapter elaborated the functions and the practical values of lexical polysemy in the compilation of dictionary, in the foreign language teaching and the translation practice, basing on the related achievement of study.
