Eileen Cheung's Fiction Tradition And Daily Narration In Literature

Eileen Cheung, who has a legendary history of acceptance in China, occupies a special space in modern Chinese literary history and deserves further study in the new age.This dissertation first puts forward two typical categories of Cheung's artistic creation: "Cheung's Narration" and her "Chinese Flavor". "Cheung's Narration" focuses on people's daily life and devotes to the details and the "bleak" historical sensibility. Then it analyzes the relationship between Cheung's narrations with that of classical Chinese literary schools and works, such as the "Old Love Story School"(鸳鸯 蝴蝶派) and the Dream of Red Mansion.Besides, Cheung's peculiarity lies in the modernity of her works, namely, her portraying of the worldly modern life, which has developed from the literary tradition of the "May-fourth Movement" and shows a kind of beauty with striking contrast. It is this kind of beauty that guides us to the understanding of the "bleak" reality of life and history.This dissertation further explores the artistic characteristics of Cheung's narrative strategies of portraying people's daily life, the everlasting individuals' lives, the relationship between the daily life and the time, and the artistic effect of the "crack" of people's daily life. Then it elaborates on Cheung's literary tradition, her strong influence on her followers in Taiwan, Hong Kong, U.S.A. and the Mainland China.Through a survey of the present study on Eileen Cheung, the dissertation tries to push people to more profound thinking: What kind of narration of daily life is closer to the essence of human beings' life? And what kind of enlightenment Eileen Cheung can provide to us?...
