Annotations on novels writing in classical Chinese is the major form in criticism of novels writing in classical Chinese. Its objects are ancient novels writing in classical Chinese, comparing with popular novels. And it has many forms such as preface and postscript. Annotations and notation, denotation, etc. The function of Annotations is to help readers further understand writers' intention and novels' characteristic. The first chapter analysis the present condition of study on Annotations on novels writing in classical Chinese, affirms the achievement of former scholars and points out that Annotations on novels writing in classical Chinese, whose representative work is Liao-zhai-zhi-yi, has not been studied systematically.Chapter Two introduces the development of Annotations on novels writing in classical Chinese, and divided Annotations on novels writing in classical Chinese into four periods, pre-Song, Song, Ming and Qing dynasty. The writer then analysis the development and transformation of annotations on novels writing in classical Chinese in each period separately.Liao-zhai-zhi-yi is the most remarkable work in novels writing in classical Chinese. It is stated that there were 16 different Annotators in Qing dynasty and was the peak of Annotations. Chapter Three analyses novels' format of Liao-zhai-zhi-yi style, assays the connotation of its Annotations, therefore affirms its value in the history of Annotations on novels writing in classical Chinese.Chapter Four analyses the motivation of Annotations on novels writing in classical Chinese. Annotators in Ming and Qing dynasty analyzed novels writing in classical Chinese carefully because they were moved by the substances in these novels, such as publication ofgoodness and punishment of badness, adoration of real love. Annotations accelerated the spreading and prevalence of novels writing in classical Chinese. Annotations has historical, propagation and artistic values, therefore is worth of being carefully studied by scholars.Part TwoThe documentation of Annotations On novels writing in classical ChineseIn light of proceeding studies, we have put in order the Annotations on novels writing in classical Chinese in history based on government and personal bibliotheca, examined and settled the existence, the Annotator and the contents, then extracts and evaluates the Annotations notes for the further studies of other scholars.
