A Study On Bai Juyi's Prose

Bai Juyi's prose, with its quantity, diversified styles, widespread and profound contents as well as its bright, prominent artistic skills, has obtained great achievement and highly admiration from the Tang Dynasty until now. In all kinds of styles such as verdict, tactic, imperial decree, memorial to the emperor, verse and so on, Bai Juyi developed his artistic field of vision to many domains in his own life. He really but vividly unfolded not only mid-Tang's political appearance, the military situation, the economical condition, the life prospect, the custom picture scroll, ethics morals, the philosophy ideological trend, but also his own rich innermost feelings and his thought which shows that he attempted to influence the life and to change the actuality at that time with the literature.The study on Bai Juyi's prose consummates the important link with the study on Bai Juyi himself. There are five chapters in this paper, where some of Bai Juyi's prose, closely connected with the Tang Dynasty imperial examination system and with members of the Imperial Academy will be selected and given comprehensive, thoroughly, and careful analysis, in order to get the reason why Bai Juyi's prose by the time were so fashionable, to promulgate Bai Juyi's prose's contribution in the literary style study, to explain the relations between Bai Juyi's prose and imperial examination as well as his prose and the political life in the Tang Dynasty, and finally to assure the prose's status in style innovation movement in the mid-Tang.The first chapter is an analysis of Hundreds of Verdicts. Verdict was a special literary style in the Tang Dynasty imperial examination, which was sure to have something to do with those who wanted to be an officeholder. Hundreds of Verdicts, written in the 18^th year of Zhenyuan (802) by Bai Juyi himself before his attending the examination. That is an important literature couching his earlier thoughts with high literary and academic value. This literature is also a real mirror of the mid-tang's social life because many problems such as the family, the marriage, the imperial examination, the funeral etiquette, the politics, the military life, the personal conduct, the law are all reflected in it.
