As the master piece of Chinese classic novels, is the gem of our national literature and also plays a very important role in the history of international literature. For gaining her fame worldwide and carrying forward the traditional Chinese culture, which represented by , we can not only ask the foreigners to master Chinese and understand all of the abstruse texts of the novel. As we know, the spreading of a novel always depends much on the excellent translators, who transfer the language, literature and culture from China to the western countries. The spreading of in Europe is the very example of the viewpoint above. At the same time a translation is the result after the collision between two different cultures and then puts the concepts of literature and culture between China and Europe in harmony. On the one hand, a translation shows us the concepts of western literature and culture, on the other hand, we can also examine our literature and culture again through the other's perspective and gain new understanding from our accustomed knowledge. So we can say that an excellent translation render a great service not only in the spreading of a novel, but also in the spiritual exchange between two nations.The key point of this dissertation is the research on the German version of , which is most popular translation of this novel in Europe last century. This dissertation is composed of seven parts. The first part is the "Foreword". Here the reasons of this work, the researches on the German version done by translator himself, Chinese Scholars and European Scholars are introduced as the foundation of the further research.The first chapter is divided into two parts. One part is about the historical and cultural background of the German version, the other one is about the translator himself. Here the biography of Dr. Franz Kuhn (1884-1961), the great translator, sinologist and independent author, will be introduced. Because of his hard working for more than forty years the German readers can enjoy most of Chinese classic novels, including , , etc.
