Feng poetry(Guofeng) is an important component part of Shijing. It is a type of poetry style contrary to that of Ya and Song. The problems we need to ponder over at present in the study of Feng poetry is what its essential features are and how we can have a better understanding of its artistic achievements. Earliest poetry in china is a combination of poems and songs ,but what we can see are only the words of the songs .Therefore, the key avenue to understand and appreciate Feng poetry is to research into its contents and style by grasping its music features. This article, guided by the theory of artistic production and using the basic concepts and train of thought of the subject of Oral Composition, deals with these problems thoroughly. The introduction part of the article firstly explains the meaning of the topic selected, then lists the major problems in the previous study of Feng poetry and on the basis of those above puts forward the purpose of the research and the major approach. The body part is divided into four chapters:The first chapter deals with the investigation and differentiation of the name and meaning of Feng poetry . By differentiating and analyzing the different versions of the name and meaning of Feng poetry, the section points out the problems in the research at present .And by investigating the source of the meaning of "feng" , it explains that the name of Feng reflects what the people of the Pre-Qin Period thought about the nature of Feng poetry, which affects the later generations' judgement of it. The investigation of the artistic nature of Feng poetry requires not only the explanation of its name , but also the contents and style of its poetry. The second chapter deals with the investigation of the characteristic of secularism of Feng poetry. By comparing the differences in emotions in Feng, Ya and Song from the texts, it proves that secularism is the essential characteristic that differs from that of other poetry. The shaping up of the characteristic is closely connected with the artistic function it undetook in the Zhou Dynasty .We can see from this that the Chinese poetry was mature in the Zhou Dynasty and poetry styles which convey different contents came into being at the same time. The third chapter deals with the research into the creation style of Feng poetry and its singing characteristic. By the investigation of the creation style in the period of Shijing and different singing characteristics of Feng, Ya and Song ,and by comparing the differences in poetry form between Feng, Ya and Song, it shows that Feng poetry is secular poetry with clear feature of being read and sung oraly. Therefore ,the grasping of its creation process must be combined with the recognizing of the regular pattern of poems being read and sung orally. Taking Zhounan Fuyi as a example, which illustrates the important role artistic processing and techniques play in the creation process of Feng poetry. The fourth chapter deals with the research in the structure of Feng poetry. Previously, the research was carried out from the written angle , and failed to combine its basic nature as music and its structure together. Therefore, it was hard to go deep in. This article uses Yang Yin-liu's summary of the musical form of Shijing from the angle of music for reference, classifies its structure, and analyzes artistically the repetition of lines. Previously, there was some research in the source and emotion expressing function of repetition, but it was far from deep. We stress the point that, in the process of repetition becoming the form characteristic of Feng, secular singing practice and professional artisans of the Zhou Dynasty played an important role, and that it was formed to meet the demands for secular singing, and the needs of aesthetic mind. Therefore, only by combining the features of singing expressing and receiving, can we get its emotion expressing function and artistic effect across. Besides, by comparing its structure with that of Ya and Song,We can see clearly that they are the same as songs in the artistic form, and that they differ greatly in the emotion expressing function. The conclusion section is the summary of the main points of view, and on the basis of that, it points out the meaning and value of the research.
