The establishment and development of market economy have led to the secularized transformation in the society and culture of China since the late 1980s, especially 1990s. During this stage, novels of citizen got the opportunity of improvement and prosperity, then gradually became very important narrative trend in the literary world. At the same time, the contemporary context bestowed the fresh content and features on it.The thesis is the thorough comparison and study on novels of citizen from the perspective of historical context in secularized transformation of society and culture. Chapter I mainly concerns about the social and cultural background affecting the writing of citizen novels in transformation stage. The rise and expansion of city residents as a social stratum provide citizen novels with new narrative resource, which leads to the transformation and prosperity of citizen novels. On the other hand, the expansion of mass culture and the cultural context, resulted from the market-oriented literature transformation stage, are the cultural macro-background for the writing of citizen novels in the transformation stage. In Chapter II, the measure of value on citizen novels in this stage is comprehensively analyzed. Novels on citizen residents, based on the daily life and necessities to meditate on the life of city residents, tend to set up a daily philosophy of existence. This philosophy is concretely and respectively discussed from four dimensions : the value of everyday life as existing form of human being; the secularized construction of mass discourse; the secularized restoration of marriage in nature; the multiple recognition on material resort. Chapter III is a study on a series of figures in citizen novels of transformation stage. In this chapter, four typical images of city residents are viewed as the embodiment of contemporary spirit reflected by their remarkable features from different dimension. In Chapter IV, narrative pursuit of citizen novels in transformation stage is focused on. The narration and aesthetic pursuit are influenced and restricted by consumption-oriented culture context, which pays much attention to the readers' aesthetic appreciation and their reading psychology from the narrative strategy, narrative style, the language, and so on.In conclusion, novels of citizen, as the new product of social and cultural transformation in China, present the value of culture and aesthetic features which like a mirror reflect the transition of society and culture of China in transitional stage.
