Chinese textbooks were the product of modern Chinese society. In 1877,School and Textbook Series Committee was founded by Christian missionary. They compiled textbooks for missionary schools at China. What they had done was helpful for Chinese to compile textbooks.Chinese textbooks arose in the late 19 century in NanYang GongXue. In the early 20 century, the Civilization Press published"Elementary Textbooks", and the Commercial Press published"the Newest Textbooks", which marked the birth of Chinese textbooks. At the early times of Republican China, Commercial Press and Zhonghua Book Co. nearly enjoyed the textbooks publishing field exclusively. In 1930s', the Commercial Press published"the Reviving Textbooks", which became a peak in the history of Chinese textbooks. In 1940s', because of the Anti-Japanese War, Chinese textbooks became declined.Chinese textbooks'editing system got mature gradually in modern times. In late Qing dynasty, the Imperial University and the Branch of Education played an important role for the originating of the system. During Republican China, the Ministry of Education undertook the function. From BeiYang Government to National Government, the editing system trend to be regulationized and centralized.The development of the textbooks was in perfect harmony with modern Chinese society, and it took park in the history depicting.Firstly, modern Chinese political power changed frequently. Each political power moulded its powerful discourse in textbooks. We can feel political changing in modern textbooks clearly.Secondly, going on with the trend of patriotism and democraticism, textbooks propagandized about national and democratic revolution and the modern enlightenment concepts. Thirdly, modern textbooks recorded history of academic development from tradition to modern times. For example, textbooks introduced the theory of evolution and scientific concepts; Chinese language separated from Chinese Literature as a branch of learning.
