In the field of children's literature, the role of old people occupies a fine unique position no matter as the narrator of a story or else as the object of the story. With full appreciation and adoration of the old people's lives and wisdom, writers always endow old people with all kind of qualities that we have ever wished for and make them ideal aesthetic emblem. As a result, old people figured in children's literature are wise men or women far away from frailness and lethargy though they're physically weak with grey hair. What they brought to readers is not faces in distress, weak bodies, or tough temper; instead they carry with them psychological maturity and personal charm which root just in the aging process. So what this thesis devotes here is to reveal the role old people act in first-class children's literature, to evoke the wisdom and strength once forgotten or neglected by us so as to analyze the possible influence it does on accepters in aspects of family relations, nature, life, personal affairs, and educational attitude.Firstly, this thesis tries to take examples of the old people roles in widespread folklores and histories all over the world, to analyze them from different angels to get a further wider sphere, in order to put these roles of old people in children's literature in a greater system and take a full view in light of a more accurate measurement. Secondly, the thesis would pick out several typical topics, that's, old people with family, old people with nature, old people with life, and old people with education. Making use of the relevant materials in fields of sociology, psychology, anthropology, and pedagogy, and through the comparison with interrelated themes in adults'literature, this thesis wants to explore the abundant life information and cultural appeal in children's literature, and describe the motivation why to be so and where the meaning lies as well.
