Xu wei is a great master in the field of fine arts in the middle and late Ming Dynasty.He was not only good at drawing, especially flowers and birds, but also achieved enormous accomplishment in poems, calligraphy, ancient prose, dramas, philosophy, etc., which makes him a well-known artist. Xu Wei was attached much importance by history of art and culture since Ming dynasty. Till now, the study on Xu Wei has become an international topic of academy. Starting from the biography of Xu Wei, this paper will research his teachers and friends, trace back the origin and development of the Philosophy of Mind, and discuss the effect of the theory-"the combination of three denomination: Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism" on Xu Wei's artistic ideas. In addition, by way of watching and analyzing the paintings by both Xu Wei and other great artists of his generation, the paper will make an objective conclusion about Xu Wei's painting, artistic ideas and his effect on the art of flowers and birds painting for nearly 400 years. So, we should realize that the study on Xu Wei's artistic ideas must have far-reaching significance and enlightenment to the Chinese paintings today.
