Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) was a major figure in the history of twentieth century music. His most famous innovation was atonality and dodecaphony in music. As a great innovator, Schoenberg maintained a strong connection with religious thought throughout his life.In order to understand Schoenberg and his music, the dissertation will study the influence of Schoenberg's religious thought on his music.The dissertation is divided into six parts: an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. The introduction is concerned about the significance of the topic, as well as domestic and international research situation of the subject. Chapter One reviews the development of Schoenberg's religious thought. Next three chapters study three aspects of the influence of Schoenberg's religious thought on music: prophetic consciousness, God idea and jewish complex, as well as analyze Vier lieder, Die Jakobsleiter, Moses und Aron, A survivor from Warsaw, Dremal tausend Jahre, and Modern Psalm. The conclusion summarizes the characteristics of the influence of Schoenberg's religious thought on music.
