Arnold Schoenberg(1874-1951)was the most revolutionary composer of the 20 th century. He ended the era of “common composition” that has existed for a century or two,and proposed the “twelve-tone composition” system, which provided a new perspective and outlet for later composers. His composition style could be roughly divided into three stages: from the beginning“semitone composition” to the middle “atonal composition”,and finally to the “twelve-tone composition”.The song cycle “Vier Lieder Op.2” selected in this thesis is one of Schoenberg's early song cycles. At that time,he was deeply influenced by Brahms and Wagner. Therefore, the song cycle still follows the German Romantic lyricism, but also includes Schoenberg's own unique creative elements and styles: concentrated expressivity, rhythm freedom, harmonic tension and richness of invention. This thesis analyzes this song cycle mainly from three aspects: background introduction, poetry analysis and singing techniques. The first chapter introduces the background of Schoenberg and this song cycle. The second chapter conducts detailed music feature analysis and text analysis of the four tracks. This chapter also deepens the analysis of the song cycle from the perspective of literature and art.The third chapter focuses on the detailed techniques for how to perform this song cycle based on my own experience.I hope this thesis can provide some valuable references for other opera singers and enthusiasts, and attract more people to Schoenberg's vocal works.
