The research focus of this paper is Chinese novels published from 2000 to 2005, which were influenced by the popular culture. And this paper discusses the popular cultural orientation of these novels. This paper includes 6 parts. Main content of each part is listed as the following:Preface Part mainly introduces the practical background and the theoretical background of the present topic, defines the core concept related to the present topic, and points out the research significance and research focus of the present topic, as well as the logic structure of the whole text. New century novels are born and developed under the circumstance of literature commercialization and marketization, boom and activity of popular media, and secular tendency of the 1990s literature. Such environment is very conducive to the rise of popular culture and literature creation is undergoing a subtle influence by gradually rising popular culture. Many researchers have noted the influence of the popular culture on Chinese literature from 1990s of the 20th century and have studied it from different angles. These results, however, were only sporadic qualitative conclusions. They lacked the necessary systematization and were unable to show the overall skeleton of the popular cultural orientation of new century novels. The core concepts related to the present topic are popular culture and popular cultural orientation. This paper compares the popular culture in the double fields of popular culture critical theory and popular culture research theory, and studies the influence of the popular culture on new century novels. The significance of the research on the popular cultural orientation of new century novels are listed hereinafter: 1. put forward the major issue that the research of contemporary Chinese literature must face to. With the establishment and the continuous improvement of China's market economy, the popular culture has become the hero of the times strongly supported by current economic system. How to assess the influence of the popular culture on the development of literature is an unavoidable major problem for Chinese contemporary literature research. 2. define the influence of the popular culture on the creation of new century novels, and list several specific performances.Chapter 1 demonstrates the assumption that "production system of new century novels under the influence of marketization provides a hotbed for the popular culture transmission" and put forward the following viewpoint: the transformation of the production system of new century novels fully reflects the conspiracy of Chinese contemporary literature and the market. A powerful demonstration of the "Bestseller system" and the sanction of the literary evaluation led by the media effectively control a series of acts of new century novels from creation to acceptance. The market performance of the writing by "after 1980", which is as a common myth, indicates a new production mode of new century novels. The production system of new century novels has been formed an interaction with China's market economy. It is this interaction that further rewritten the prospect of Chinese literature and the rise of the popular culture is one of the inevitable results of this interaction.Chapter 2 demonstrates the assumption that "the popular culture has become a cultural strategy for new century novel" and put forward the following viewpoint: parts of new century novels, which have popular cultural orientation, close the gap between the elite culture, the mainstream ideology culture and the popular culture by transforming the value orientation and novel form. Market economy impacts and changes several ideological fields including literature. Writers are forced to rethink the survival and development of their own lives and literature when facing to the reality. The initial life experiences of the writers, including cultural-psychological structure, as well as the understanding of the value and forms of the literary, are discarded by the fast-developed real life. This chapter takes political novels and "pioneer turning", which are two representative novel types and literary facts, as examples to demonstrate the creation tendency of ideology writers and elite writers toward the popular culture.Chapter 3 demonstrates the assumption that "the fashion tendency of the popular culture influences the creation mode of new century novels" and put forward the following viewpoint: simulacrum writing is a writing mode of new century novels production that is characteristic of replication. In the cultural industry era, which is characteristic of mechanical replication, movies and television, online games, news, history and so on may become the resources available for the cultural industry. Simulacrum becomes commoner and commoner as a novel creation technics. The first is that novels replicate movies & television, games and news, therefore produce so-called movies & television novels, online games novels and news-simulacrum novels. The distinction between novels and movies & television, games and news has become increasingly blurred. The second is historical simulacrum, deconstructing and consuming history in the play. The replicate technology of simulacrum liberates the things, which is replicated by such technology, from the traditional areas. Because it has produced a large number of copies, it replaces the unique being by these copies; because it could makes these copies to be appreciated by the recipients in their own environment, it has given realistic vitality to the copied objects. The replication feature of the popular culture is the root of the simulacrum.Chapter 4 demonstrates the assumption that "the popular culture influences the aesthetic taste of new century novels" and put forward the following viewpoint: the preference of "Body Writing" has become a collective unconsciousness for parts of contemporary Chinese writers. Therefore the aesthetic tastes of new century novels are promoted to be "materialization". The materialization feature of aesthetic taste of new century novels is represented mainly through three aspects of the physical pleasure writing: first, sexual description having nothing to do with poetic feeling; second, violent carnival directly related to bodies; third, material forming of the physical desires. The aesthetic taste of the popular culture revealed by the physical pleasure writing of new century novels is analyzed by interpreting specific texts in this chapter. Conclusion Part evaluates the influence of the popular culture on new century novels in the double fields of popular culture criticism and popular culture research, and puts forward the following viewpoint: on one hand, the influence of the popular culture on new century novels is realistically reasonable. On the other hand, we should give sufficient attention to the tendency of wanton deconstruction of the spirit of the Chinese culture; such tendency has been put up in the popular culture. Or else, over-encouraging popular cultural orientation of new century novels may go against our national cultural strategy.
