Critique On Zhang Chengzhi

The 30 years of Zhang Chengzhi's writing is the spiritual experience, during which he has been seeking his spiritual values. During his spiritual experience he met with the culture of prairie and Islam, when he absorbed the culture resources, his cultural identity has changed from The Red Guards to The Intellectual Youth, then to the shepherd, then to the scholar, last to Islam believer. During the changing process, the author has adapted his thoughts, instead of complete self-negative. It seems that each kind of cultural identity is different, but it has the inner connection, that is, "people and freedom consciousness" that the author has been looking after, therefore, the author has formed his intellectual writing outlook.According to the developing process of intellectual writing outlook, the thesis isdivided into three parts: forming period of intellectual writing outlook, developingperiod of intellectual writing outlook, and mature period of intellectual writing outlook. To analyze the development of the author's thoughts and spiritual experience depending on his works chronologically. The thesis covers the knowledge of the culture of prairie and Islam, religious knowledge, and Post colonialism. After the chronological research, to syntactically compare with another Hui ethnic group author, so as to emphasis on his intellectual identity. Among his several cultural identities the intellectual identity is the core. The author's intellectual thoughts including three points: 1. On people's side, to represent people's benefit, and speak for the disadvantaged people; to care for the disadvantaged people, even if facing the difficulties and dangers, still to appeal for people, representing of justice forever. 2. To seek spiritual freedom, and being of independent thoughts, instead of being in fashion; to dare to doubt the main ideological thoughts. 3. To be outside of political system, daring to speak the truth to the power.The following is the structure of the thesis: At first, in the preface, to definite who is the intellectual; to distinguish humanism in Zhang Chengzhi's thoughts from the humanism of western literature; by analyzing the definition of Populism to discuss that Zhang Chengzhi's thoughts of "To serve for the people" is not Populism, but is the choice of an intellectual. Secondly, in the first chapter, depending on the historical and contextual that the author was in; to discuss the meaning of The Red Guards' spirit in Zhang Chengzhi's outlook, and reflection on the spirit of The Red Guards; to analyze the author's cognition of the culture of prairie from his double perspective.Thirdly, in the chapter 2, to discuss the conflict in author's mind because of his different cultural identities, and analyzing how the author broke out the conflict by putting his humanism into divine values; to discuss the philosophical thoughts in Islam Jahariyah and symbol meaning of Jahariyah is similar to the thoughts and characteristic quality of Zhang Chengzhi; to discuss author being outside of political system, becoming a real public intellectual advocated by Said.Fourthly, in the chapter 3, to discuss intellectual thoughts of Zhang Chengzhi tends to reasonable and mature in the recent essays, it concentrated on the reflection on the culture of Islam in view of intellectual; getting to the high level in cognition; meanwhile, to discuss the Post colonialism in his works, from these thoughts reflecting his intellectual writing outlook.At last, by comparing to another Hui ethnic group author who grew in the village area of Xihaigu( it refers to Xiji, Haiyuan, Guyuan counties) prefecture, to prove Zhang Chengzhi's main thought is his intellectual thought; to discuss the different identity combination around the intellectual identity, therefore, it formed his rich and colorful, but particular spiritual world.The thesis discusses the writing experience by chronological analysis and syntactic comparing perspective; by different knowledge and perspective such as culture, religious philosophy, art aesthetics, psychology, social thoughts, etc., to objectively and completely master and understand the author's thoughts in his works and his writing intention as possible as I can, thus, to clear up the misunderstanding on Zhang Chengzhi and his works.
