This dissertation attempts to explore the "new period" of contemporary Chinesetheatrical choreography focusing on its history from a political-cultural perspective,explaining and reviewing the changes of choreography and choreographers of Chinesetheatrical dance since China's reform and open door policy in the late 1970s.The dissertation will examine contemporary Chinese choreographers' groups,choreographic philosophy and ideas, and performing systems in the background oftransitional political culture in the reformist age. It will also set up a framework ofanalysis and use it to analyze the complex interactions between the changing politicalculture on one side and the contemporary choreography in China in last three decades onthe other.
