Adopting the methods and methodologies of Structured Observation,Cognitive Poetics and Analytical Psychology, this study aims at asystematic and deep investigation and exploration on The Book of Songsfrom the perspective of psychology. It reveals that the composition grammarof poems in The Books of Songs undertakes transition from the simplest tothe most complicated, which is due to the developing patterns of oraltraditions in China. It claims that the formation of the form of poems isrelative to the memory systems of human brain; the themes of the poemsbelong to real life memory, and the reason why The Book of Songs is wellpreserved is relative to the functioning of the cultural unconscious. Itreaches the conclusion that The Book of Songs is the CulturalAutobiographical Memory of Chinese people. The Preface describes the basic organization of the whole study. TheIntroduction Part includes three chapters. Chapter 1 gives a summarizationof previous researches on The Book of Songs. Chapter 2 discusses thedifficulties in the study of The Book of Songs and explores the outlet for thedilemmas now facing researchers. Chapter 3 introduces the researchproblems and the methods and methodologies adopted in this study.Part Two is the text part, including four researches.Researchâ… (Chapter 4): Rehearsal and Variation: A StructuredObservation on the structure of The Book of Songs. In this study, a codescheme is adopted, including pre-determined observation catalogues and acode record form. Three observers involved in the structured observation, which results in good validity. Based on the quantities data obtained fromobservation, the researcher brings up eight composition grammars, whichrepresents the development of oral traditions in The Book of Songs. Researchâ…¡(Chapter 5): Fighting Against Forgetfulness: the formationof the form of poems and the memory function. In this study, the researcherclaims that the poems presenting the simplest composition grammar belongsto the earliest oral tradition, and the formation of this grammar is relative tothe memory structure and process. From the perspective of the encoding, store and retrieval of the auditory information, the levels of processingtheory, dual-coding theory and phonological loop model can account for theassumption that the simplest composition grammar utilizes the memoryresources of human memory. From the level of processing, poems adoptingthis grammar conduct "maintenance rehearsal" and "elaboration rehearsal"of the auditory information automatically. The phenomenon of repetitivewords, assonance and rhymes, reveals the utilization of the "phonologicalsimilarity effect" in the phonological store of the phonological loop. Theaim here is to attract the attention of audience, while at the same timeenables the audience experience aesthetic sensations. The poems belongingto the first grammar also contain many images. The words describingimages can be stored through both verbal and image encoding, which canincrease the possibility of being stored in the long-term memory. In order toescape from the name-block effect, these poems use descriptive adjectivessuch as "the cunning boy" or "the beautiful girl" instead of proper names, which also increase the possibility of being recalled without memory block.Researchâ…¢(Chapter 6): Poems speak for memory: Memory in TheBook of Songs and Memory in real life. Drawing from the studies on reallife memory, which include prospective memory, episodic memory, semantic memory, autobiographical memory and flashbulb memory, theresearcher brings up seven types of narratives in The Book of Songs whichare in close relationship with real life memory: the narrative of prospectivememory; the narrative of semantic memory; the narrative of personal episodic memory; the narrative of episodic memory in autobiographicalmemory; the narrative of semantic memory in autobiographical memory; thenarrative of autobiographical memory, and the narrative of flashbulbmemory. These narratives reflect the real life moments of our ancientancestors.Researchâ…£: The Individuation of the Cultural Psyche: Exploring TheBook of Songs and the Cultural Unconscious. From the perspective of thecultural unconscious, the researcher conducts a deep analysis andinterpretation on The Book of Songs, which reveals the archetypal contentsof our cultural unconscious: Cultural Complexes: abandonment;complaining; anxiety; world-weariness; separation and immediatepleasure-seeking; Cultural Persona: eulogizer/being eulogized; bless-offerand people full of hospitality; Cultural Shadow: people lack sincerity;exaggerated eulogizer; person with misconducts, and so on. In The Book ofSongs, we can also find the Cultural Anima/Animus, and the Cultural Selfwhich manifests itself in images of good-harmony between human-beingsand the nature, and good-harmony among people.Partâ…¢is the conclusion: The Book of Song and the CulturalAutobiographical Memory of Chinese People. In this part, a theoreticalexploration is conducted to conceptualize the concept of the CulturalAutobiographical Memory. At the same time, the researcher brings up thedirection for further study. This study is the first study on The Book of Song which is totally fromthe standpoint of psychology. In the methodology of Cognitive Poetics,"Poetics" means the continuation between this study and the traditionalresearches, while the word "Cognitive" reflects recent theories and finds incognitive science. In the methodology of Analytical Psychology, a theorywhich is open and always developing, the concept of collective unconscious and the theory of individuation are linked together with Henderson'sconcept of the cultural unconscious. In this study, the researcher introducesthe notion of the individuation of the cultural psyche, and the concept ofcultural autobiographical memory for the first time domestic and abroad. The researcher also claims that the aim of constructing a harmonioussociety is congruent with the aim of the individuation of the cultural psyche:to actualize a united, balance cultural psyche of wholeness.
