Along with the economic and cultural globalization in the 21st century and the flourish of international academic communication, there are greater demands for the creativity of the qualified talents majoring in foreign languages. Consequently, the academic development of English postgraduates has aroused the interest of foreign languages circle, yet there are comparatively fewer empirical researches. Therefore, by means of literature review, questionnaire, interview and case study, this dissertation tends to integrate academic competence development with relevant theories in linguistics, psychology, second language acquisition, and education. On the basis of clarifying theories concerning academic competence, this dissertation attempts to analyze the relevant factors via using concrete statistics and examples, and also probes into the multidimensional development of academic competence from the perspectives of learners' cognitive affective factors and external factors.This dissertation finds out that most studies focus on the educational aspect and are of qualitative nature. There are few studies regarding English postgraduate's academic competence, academic development, and principles of development, internal and external factors. Especially there exists a lack of empirical research. Meanwhile, it is of necessity to enrich the academic communication focusing on academic competence development.This dissertation tends to clarify the concept such as academic study, academic competence, academic sense, and academic continuum. It points out that academic competence mainly includes the competence of language acquisition, knowledge expansion and academic research. Academic competence is dynamic and when one's academic competence develops to a degree, the academic sense will be cultivated. It researches into the academic principles including that of standardization, creativity, diversity and development. The procedure of academic competence development is also discussed, together with the principles of academic competence development including goal-orientation, cognition-affect consideration, systematicity and innovation, multidimensional development, interaction, collaboration and inquiry.This dissertation probes into the relationship between a person's academic competence and cognitive style, learning strategies, motivation, introversion/extroversion, and anxiety. The writer attempts to illustrate her own definitions and views, and analyze the enlightenment of relevant studies on the teaching of English postgraduates. It emphasizes that the learners' cognitive affective factors should be considered so as to understand their individual differences, arouse their academic motivation and expand relevant knowledge.This dissertation analyzes the questionnaire and interview concerned. First it explains investigation instruments, subjects and procedures. Then it deals with the aspects of administration, teaching, teaching resources, participation in academic activities, academic proficiency and academic motivation. Finally it suggests that there should be proper academic motivation, and we need to promote the postgraduate' academic development from internal cognitive affective factors on the one hand, and external factors on the other hand.This dissertation also attempts to probe into the integration of academic competence development and self-access, significant learning, collaborative-inquiry, cognition-action and self-meditation views of Confucianism. With the aid of concrete examples and concise diagrams, it expounds each theory concerned, analyzes the role of teachers and students, learning procedures and the application of theories. It also explains the advantages and limitations, so as to shed light on postgraduate teaching and academic competence development.This dissertation expounds the relationship between English postgraduates' academic competence development and some external factors such as curriculum design, teaching materials, evaluation, supervisor and academic environment. It defines and analyzes relevant factors, puts forward some principles, strategies and suggestions combined with the current situation of English postgraduate education, with the purpose of enhancing their academic competence and advancing the all-around development of this discipline.In summary, this dissertation tends to make a multidisciplinary study of English postgraduates' academic competence. It forms a new perspective for relevant theoretical study via the systematic analysis of concepts and principles. The paradigm combined with specific examples will also be of practical value to English postgraduate education.
