| This dissertation focuses on the narrative strategies of the "Spirit of May 4th", that is, how "May 4th" is described. With the comprehensive examination of the fluctuations of Ba Jin's thoughts and writings in over seventy years of his career, I tend to explicate the complex relations between such fluctuations and the narrations of the "Spirit of May 4th", in the course of which the headways of times and the strata of thoughts are both unfolded. This case study renders to clarify the influences of the different narrations of "May 4th" on the literary progress, along with on the creations and practices of writers. Therefore, an opportunity of understanding the significance of "Spirit of May 4th" for intellectuals, as well as its historical functions in the progress of modern Chinese thoughts and culture.I concentrate on the fluctuations of the spirit of May 4th in a long run rather than its formation, meaning and constitution. Ba Jin is chosen of my objective in view of the following reasons. Firstly, I consider Ba Jin belonging to the transitional eneration in the development of May Fourth Literature, a child of May Fourth New Culture. Moreover, his generation is the one that successfully changes this kind of literary spirit to the social ethos with their writings and practices. Secondly, Ba Jin stands as the cynosure, experiencing almost all the eras of modern Chinese literature from the birth of May Fourth to the new era literature. Thus he is an appropriate objective to investigate the vicissitudinous relations between a writers' changeable thoughts and works and the ambience. Thirdly, Ba Jin insists on the spirit of the enlightenment of May Fourth. This is a basic point throughout his life. In this sense, he is a best embodiment of the spiritual values of May fourth in modern China. This dissertation goals to manifest the fluctuations of spirit of May Fourth in the twentieth century after the life of Ba Jin as well as after his creations, his spiritual experiences and life conditions, and goals to explain the different orientations and meanings of May Fourth in different literatures from the perspective of the image of May Fourth, namely, the portrait and recollection of May Fourth. Finely, it also goals to explore the function of the spirit of May Fourth in the writer's practice and hence its influence and function of the society.Expanding the case study to the wide context of "May 4", the author argues that the spirit of May 4th spirit, though it has its own spirit and origin, is also a shaped tradition. In the course of "spread-acceptance-spread" its various facets will be differently highlighted and rewritten where May 4th forms its own positions and actions based on reality. A brief introduction to the main distinctions at different times in history, "May 4th" narrative, and thus leads to a major concern of this thesis; Chapter one, "the spirit of the May 4th in the narrations of Ba Jin". During different periods, "May 4th" experiences a narrative thread, as well as changes in Ba Jin's thoughts of May 4th. This chapter explains the different points of emphasis of the authors reflect personal thoughts and ideas between different social delicate entangled.The second chapter, "the image of May fourth in the portraits of Ba Jin" includes the disentanglements of a serial of old and new images, such as the new publications, women students, "home" and the streets, in order to check the relations between the personal memories and May 4th spirit from the different facets; Meanwhile, it looks at the general issues of the different images and different direction in the writers of memory and narrations on May 4.The third chapter "in the practice of Ba Jin's life on May 4 spirit," is to explain the ways of heritage of May Fourth by investigating the May 4th spirit of the practice of Ba Jin's life through personal influence and the practice of Ba Jin.The dissertation ends with the conclusion "transcendence of May 4 or reiterating of the Enlightenment". It assesses its value and significance as well as reflects its historical function. It sums up with the transition of the heritage of May Fourth into the sources of contemporary thoughts and actions.May 4th New Culture Movement is the impact of 20th century China and the nation's modernization one of the most important thinking of the Enlightenment, and the new one of the major literary movement as a part of, not only shouldering a classical Chinese literature to the mission of modern literature conversion, but also shoulder Enlightenment thinking, open their wisdom, and the mold family ideals, promote modernization of the ideological and nation-building tasks. The May 4th spirit radical new literature, in particular the investigation of their impact and in the subsequent flow from the theory of sense, it means the Chinese literature in the 20th century has traveled over the road, the spirit of traditional intellectuals carding and reflection. Based on the present, the in-depth historical context carding its significance is looking to the future, to the experiences and lessons of history as to the future development of literature-Kam. Although this is difficult to fully achieve this task, but it is a modern literary researchers need to sort out and work hard at it wishes.
