In terms of the intersection ofhistoricalmaterialism and humanics, this dissertation onttempts to give an objective and systematic elaboration of the roles of irrational factors insocialhistorical developmen.t The dissertation builds the framework of theories by definingirrationality, analyzing irrationalism, exploring the bases and functions of irrationality, dis-secting the roles of irrational factors and sublating irrationality.A definition of irrationality from the pointofview ofhistoricalmaterialism is the prem-ise. As a philosophical category corresponding to rationality, irrationality is a special aspectof social spiritual life, a peculiar phenomena of human psychology, a kind of disordered,normless and nonlogical social consciousness or social spiritual phenomena.From the pointofview of socialprogress and individual all round developmen,t we canfind the background and basis of irrationality issues. In comparision with rationalism, thebook expounds the genesis, developmen,t theme,merits and demerits of irrationalism. Itan-alyzes the theoretic faults of irrationalism and the negative roles of irrationalism in sociallife.Exploring the bases and functions of irrationality is essential forelaboration of the rolesof irrational factors in socialhistoricaldevelopmen.t The dissertation explores the bases andfunctions of irrationality by analyzing the physiologicalbasis and the socialbasis of irration-ality, irrationality and social structure, irrationality and human social historical action, irra-tionality and social laws.Respectively researching the roles of irrational factors is indispensable for elaborationof the roles of irrational factors in social historical developmen.t The dissertation emphati-cally inspects the roles of irrational factors by respectively researching the roles of desireandmotion, passion and wil,l intuition and inspiration, collective unconsciousness, beliefand idea.lThere is the complication of important positive and neglectless negative roles of irra- tionality in socialhistorical developmen.t The aim of researching irrationality lies in subla-ting irrationality. By inspecting the ranges and ways of the roles of irrationality, the bookholds that theways of sublating of irrationality lie in coordinating irrationalitywith rationali-ty and corresponding the roles of irrationality to social laws on the basis of social practice.
