A Study On The Modern Fiction

There are different ideas as regards the definition of The Modern Fiction. In this paper, The Modern Fiction means the fiction which aimes at enlightenning the mass and saving the country, responding to advocacy of Revolution in the Fiction Circles. The Modern Fiction is quite different from the traditional fiction due to the particular society and epoch background of the late-Qing dynasty,in such aspects of the Modern Fiction as the writers, medias, readers, types and material. The paper probes into the Modern Fiction against the background, giving the complicated essence of it from the perspective of literature and culture.There are six chapters in this dissertation.Chapter 1 explores the specific historical context of the Modern Fiction. The Modern Fiction is shaped by historical opportunities: the prosperous Shanghai Settlement, literary consumptive market, fictional dissemination, the rising of the Revolution in the Fiction Circles and new ideas about fictional prose; Chapter two is to carry research into the writers of the Modern Fiction, which can be divided into three groups, of whom the professional writers have undoubtedly made the most important contribution to development of the Modern Fiction.; The following chapter tries to give a general picture of the Modern Fiction. Due to Liang qi-chao's advocating with unmost strength, the political novels have greatly influenced the Modern Fiction not only in content but in narrative style, and inclined the Modern Fiction to tend towards anti-literature. The Modern Fiction, to some extent, has been changed into argumentation; Chapter 4 mainly discusses the relations between the types of the Modern Fiction and medias of the Modern Fiction. The development of communication medias have attributed a lot to the Modern Fiction, of which the prosperity of the paper and magazine are the most important. The publication of New Novel has brought along the boom of novelistic magazines and being published in magazines became the main form of novelistic publication in the period, which made magazine to influence much on novelistic development. It is not excessive to say that the time of the Modern Fiction is a time of magazine literature; The following chapter mainly talks about reader awareness of the Modern Fiction. To achieve the goal of enlightening the mass, the advocates pay much attention to the readers and work out many tactics in writting. But the failure is inevitable as the result of the foundation character of the Modern Fiction being neglected; The last chapter put forth effort to elaborate in reading the texts carefully. The Modern Fiction is not only full of new concepts and new things, but also imbued with new narrative styles. The increasing use of limitted point of view and transforming the conventional temporal procession of narration are distinct exemples. In all, the Modern Fiction holds a very important position in the history Chinese literature and is thought to be the bridge between classical fiction and modern fiction.
