This paper is a case study on an English-Chinese translation project about family and parenting to discuss how to apply reader awareness in the translation of popular science texts in order to make the translation better accepted by target readers as well as meet their needs and expectations.Based on the characteristics and functions of popular science texts and information about the target readers, the author points out that while translating a popular science text, the translator is expected to be reader-oriented,otherwise many problems may occur,i.e.the translation not comprehensible and acceptable by the readers, giving them unpleasant reading experience,or adding to their cognitive load.By comparative analyzing the first and final translated version of the texts, the author tentatively proposes some suggestions on how to properly apply reader awareness in translating English popular science texts into Chinese to improve readers' acceptability,i.e.adopting a reader-friendly language style, keeping the translation conforming to Chinese language habits and Chinese way of thinking, revealing hidden information, adding culturerelated background information, and subtracting or replacing the information in an original text that does not need to be communicated in the translation. |
