The focal point of this research is to study 'Xiu Zhu Yuan's master', Chen Zhan Quan (1916-1986), who has been well known as an unusual and uncommon poet by the scholars in Hong Kong. This research uses the angle of tradition, that is reading people and discussing life, to probe into Chen's poetry. It looks into Chen's poetry, first by his literature; second by his academic attainments and cultural education; third by his succession to the guide of the rich in late Zing; and by his invention of new cultural generation. From these points, it proves the continuity and sustainable development of Chinese literature in Hong Kong. Furthermore, it investigates how did Chen acted as "Confucian overlord" and straggled to propagate Chinese literature in the time of New Cultural Revolution.This research combines Chen's personality and his poems as its main theme. Generally, the first four chapters explain the Chen's biography, the period in his life and the background information of his poetry. The first chapter is introduction, which tells the reason of researching Chen and learning value of Chen's poetry. In the second chapter, it explains the personal characteristics of Chen and his ideas of writing a poem by looking at: background of his time, his personal experience, and his relationship between friends and teachers. In chapter 3, it tries to arrange tons of monographs about Chen's in order, so to find out why were his poems named as 'poems from the scholar'. In chapter four, it talks about the storage status and writing period of Chen's poems, as for analyze standard for the following chapters. Besides, it figure out if the personality of Chen's causes the lost of his poems, and this may further explains why Chen's had numerous students but so few written poems.For the next four chapters, from chapter five to chapter eight, it is directly researching 'Xiu Zhu Yuan's poetry'. It discusses the origin of Chen's poetry, creation ideas, thoughts, and personality respectively. On the aspect of poetry's origin, as Chen was born in the time of disorder, this driven him ever more cherish the nation, and that was why his poems were under a great influence of Yuan Haowen's poetry. For creation ideas, Chen's especially emphasis on 'learning accumulation', as he believed, by this could have created good poems. And he highly valued the purpose of poetry is to maintain nation's security, so it was why Chen always pointed out that the theme of poetry should be to narrate instead of writing mountain scene. Besides, another characteristics of this poems was to give vent to his comments, which included political, historical and poetical, amount these, the most famous is Chants the epic poem. These poems enable Chen to show his image of 'Confucian overlord', and his personality of emotional and clear demarcation between hate and love. As for the characteristics of "Yi" and 'prose-style poetry', they are also commonly found in Chen's poetry.Chapter nine is overall comments on Chen's personality and his poetry that caused influences to Chinese literature. Through these comments, they help to firmly establish Chen's status on Chinese literature.As for the reference and information that I have read in researching, please refer to appendix. |
