William Chalmers Burns is the first English Presbyterian Church Missionary to China, who serves as the culture envoy in Sino-Occidental communications. Based on the Chinese versions of The Pilgrim's Progress by William Chalmers Burns, the dissertation deals with his missionary life and literary fruits as follows:Chapter One Preface Outlines the origin and values of the dissertation, relevant researches, material collections, analytical approaches and major contents.Chapter Two William Chalmers Burns and Christian Evangelical Revivals Describes William Chalmers Burns' Childhood addicted to The Pilgrim's Progress, his juvenile converted into Christian preacher and Christian Evangelical Revivals.Chapter Three Missionary Progress of William Chalmers Burns Deals with Historical background for William Chalmers Burns, including the brief history of English Presbyterian and Chinese images in the missionaries; William Chalmers Burns' missionary progress, missionary spirit and literary fruits.Chapter Four William Chalmers Burns and The Pilgrim's Progress Elaborates on John Bunyan and The Pilgrim's Progress; the translation settings of The Pilgrim's Progress, and the Chinese versions of The Pilgrim's Progress by William Chalmers Burns.Chapter Five Translation of The Pilgrim's Progress by William Chalmers Burns Compares the Chinese versions by William Chalmers Burns and John Bunyan's English original, in terms of Translation Strategy, Stylistic Skills and Poetical Appreciations, so as to investigate the choices of rendering skills and their corresponding advantages and disadvantages, as well as their cultural support.
