Although quite influential in the realm of the late modern Japanese literature, Murousaisei(Aug.01. 1889~Feb. 26.1962) hasn't yet entered the vision of the canonical critics, and thus he is as much praised as blamed. Up till now, despite the fruitful researches on him, a systematic and in-depth study on his literary works is still needed. This research, on the basis of positivism, invokes several critical theories (including postmodern theory) combined especially with psychology to exercise both a macro- and micro- examination of his works and comprehensively probe into the process in which his self-inferiority originates and dissolves into 'self-fulfillment' and 'transcending' for the purpose of picturing his whole silhouette in literature and promote the study of Murousaisei literature to a higher level.Factors such as environment of birth and growth, rough looks and two years' primary education lead to a strong sense of complex, afflicted with which, the young Murousaisei has to immerse himself into Nature to seek the consolation in his heart and, in the end, takes up literary creation as his 'show-off compensation'. In deep love with his hometown, first, Murousaisei achieves his 'comforting compensation' by way of creating haiku and simultaneously cultivates his creativity and enrich his sense of esthetics, and then has literary creation as his career. But the short haiku can't satisfy his increasing desire to shake off his complex, Murousaisei turn to create free verse which fits well to express his emotions. He parallels in fame with Hagiwarasakutarou for lyric poetry and makes tremendous contribution to the establishment and development of Japanese poetry of oral style and his influence are far and deep.Likewise because poetry cannot eradicate his complex, Murousaisei switches to novel writing. In his 'early trilogy', he creates a world of lyrical tonality and perfection in thrall to his suppression of his complex and beautification of his miserable past and his success in 'overcoming compensation' and at same time establishes his novelist position. However, lyrics and beauty, which just result in his short-lived self-indulgence, is definitely unable to help him face reality. Together with his immature techniques of writing and his rudely made novels, Murousaisei is rendered into a low tide of writing. During this period, apart from his first period of fairytales and 'historical fact novels', Murousaisei creates a great number of 'jealousy novels' due to his psyche of jealousy and 'novels of prostitution'largely depicting prostitutes'life under the drive of "prostitutes'love", all because he fears that he might lose his established position in the literary realm and his family which takes great pains to form. The novels look drastically distinct in genre and content, but in fact they share the same root: Murousaisei's endeavor to break his complex.Aware of his weakness of early lyrical and beautifying writing and on the basis of his research in the first period of low tide, Murousaisei begins to face the origin of his complex and initiates his first step to dissolve his complex by taking the'assaulting compensation' through the activities of the 'street people'with a double character of both wildness and benevolence. But due to readers' esthetic jaded palette for his invariable subject and the influence of the governmental policy for literature and art in the wartime, and, above all, his 'overindulgence in self and failure to rid his complex, Murousaisei falls into his second low tide slow and long. But never is it a retrogression or the repetition of the first low tide. In his 'dynasty novels' drawing on 'historical fact novel', Murousaisei successfully portrays the female image of traditional beauty by synthesizing the virtues of mother, step-mother and the women he encounters throughout his life. In 'Jinkichi novel' with him as its prototype and the ordinary people in wartime delineated and in his second period of fairytales, he airs his 'evasive attitude' toward war via his pity and sympathy for weak and small creatures. But more importantly, through his unique literary creation and his unswerving effort to overcome complex, he clears the decks for his third peak period of writing.Murousaisei, having shaken off his 'emotional entanglement' and achieved his 'self-fulfillment' and 'transcending', has successfully universalized and socialized his personal life which is so much different from that of the common people and, with his mature writing skills gained from experiences, has produced works that prove his effort to get over his complex in the third peak period and greatly inspire the postwar Japanese people. There is no denying that Murousaisei's literary works present world where he succeeds in realizing 'self-fulfillment' and 'transcending' after he shatters his complex.
