The author is going to study the formation of radicalism in China from a new perspective, namely the perspective of literary politics. In this thesis, literary politics refers to the rational trend of political phenomenon that the literary men publicize simple and basic, abstract and absolute political value through political literature and literary politics writing to impact on public's political views. The author believes that radicalism contains two aspects of meaning; one refers to a state of mind, namely the urgent and radical emotion, and the other refers to radical political ideas and means.Compared to the conservative, the radicalism often calls for a comprehensive and thorough reform or revolution over the political status quo in an attempt to complete the transformation of the society in one battle. In the choice of means, if they chose the shock therapy to reform, they will use the revolutionary violence means to replace the other means when they feel that the reforms is not to succeed. The phenomenon of literary politics in the 1980's is common and influential. Literary politics influences rationalism from two aspects. First, it causes the formation of radical sentiments by the emotional exaggeration of literature. Second, in literary politics, literary men require a comprehensive and thorough reform. They negate the traditional Chinese culture, overlook China's own characteristics and advocate the complete Westernization as the standard to reform. There are many deficiencies in literary politics phenomenon. First, it's dualistic way of thinking reduces their spirit of tolerance required in freedom and democracy they advocated. Second, it's simple and basic slogan of freedom and democracy is another "anti-utopia" Utopia. The freedom and democracy is only a fantasy. They fail to find a way and means to realize it. The slogan of freedom and democracy is essentially replacing the past inequality by the elite of democracy and freedom. It lacks concern over the practical problems in the lower classes. When the regime remains strong, their propositions are not necessarily be supported by the majority. In addition to introduction and conclusion, the thesis is divided into four parts. In the introduction, the author puts forward the questions that this thesis is to study and answer, reviews and analyzes the past researching results, sums up the significance of this research and proposes the new perspectives and research framework of the thesis. The first part is a detailed analysis of the key concepts of the thesis—literary politics phenomenon, and its performance in China in reality. The second part analyses the traditional cultural and political background that literary politics appears in the 1980s in China. It specifically inspects the cultural mechanisms of literary politics in China—literary public sphere, and points out the profile and characteristics of literary public sphere in the 1980's.The third part discusses the literary men's literature complex and political sentiments in the literary politics in the 1980s of China and describes the process of formation and development of literary politics in the 1980's: the political literature and literary politics.Part IV first defines the rationalism in 1980's and then analyses the performance of rational emotion and the proposition of rationalism in literary politics in 1980's through analyzing a large number of materials, so as to draw readers from a radical picture of 1980's. The last section is a summary of the influence of literary politics on the fate of rationalism. Once losing the support of political power and lacking support from the bottom, rationalism is a Utopia and therefore can not realize its rational proposition. This thesis concludes that literary politics is a unique political phenomenon of China in the 1980's. The phenomenon has link with the rationalism in the 1980's of China. It not only influences the rise and development of rationalism in China, but also affects its fate of failure.China's modernization needs stability, and the stability of society needs a harmonious, rational and balanced and diverse ideological world, which depends on the withdrawal of literary politics and the tolerance of political power. After the 1990's in China, with the withdrawal of literary politics and the tolerance of political power, such kind of rational and multiple thought is taking shape. This has created ideological conditions for China's modernization.
