Wong Yoon Wah is a writer and scholar, whose literary career started early in Malaysia, the postcolonial situation he was born in.Later he went to Taiwan, collecting certain mature taste of the literature in the vernacular Chinese, then returned to his hometown teaching for a while, and later went to the United States learning the macro-perspective of literature.Again he returned to Southeast Asia, teaching, doing research, and meanwhile, shaping his idea of the Native Chinese Literary Center in the postcolonial situation under the concept of globalization. Wong Yoon Wah built up his literary theory first by his experiences of writing and translation, then by his studying the Chinese classics, the comparative literature, and the cultural studies, and finally,by his joining the trend of globalization and of multi-perspectives on literature. All these lead him to his current developing the postcolonial native literature of Singapore and Malaysia. His discipline of literature is both Chinese and Western. With the comparative method, he studied the poetics of the late Tang Dynasty poet Ssu-K' ung T' u so that he knew how to avoid the weak part of New Criticism that neglected the life and background of a writer. He turned to the Confucian Humanism in studying Lu Xun,Shen Congwen,Lao She,and Yu Dafu, the early Chinese modern writers.Recently,Wong Yoon Wah focused on the construction of marginal literature through the method of "Southeast Imagination," aiming at changing Singapore into the paradigm of Overseas Chinese Literature Center. The key points of his theory are of the post-colonial view."Double Tradition" and "Multi-cultural Literature Center" are the concepts applied by him to define the possibility and necessity of the global Chinese literature;therefore, he may popularize his idea of the shifting paradigm that transcends over nations and emphasizes the native literature.Wong Yoon Wah combines the Chinese and Western methods to do his research,so he sees the importance of both the author and the work considered in the critical analysis, the effectiveness of the close reading of New Criticism, and the functions of the structure idea of comparative literature,of the modern psychology, and of the cultural studies. Therefore,on one hand, he emphasizes a new relationship between Chinese writers and Cultural China;on the other hand,he establishes the aesthetics of native literature. In Southeast Asia, with his leading the literary activities and his constant encouragement to new writers,Wong Yoon Wah is generally recognized as the paradigm of scholar who is striving to enhance the global position of Chinese literature.
