"The prose of Su and Huang boasted the greatest fame during the Yuan You period".Huang Tingjian's prose works were widely spread for their high qualities even whenHuang was still alive. This dissertation is the first thorough systematic and all-aroundresearch on Huang's prose writings. In this dissertation,I studies about 2900 Huang's prose works and classifies them intofour periods which are studying away from home period, low political stratum period, government official period and relegation period. The first period is from the fifthyear of Jia You period to the second year of Yuan Feng period (1060—1079),duringwhich,Huang started his prose inditement with a high starting point. In the works ofthese years,he stated his views frankly neglecting all outmoded conventions. However,it can be noticed that he tried to imitate some other writers. The time fromthe third year ofYuan Feng to the eighth year ofYuan Feng (1080—1085)belongs tothe second period, during which,Huang struggled as a low political official. In theseyears,he started to form his own unique style and prose theory as well, whichindicates the formation of his consciousness on prose writing. The governmentofficial period lasts from the first year of Yuan You period to the first year of ShaoSheng period (1086—1094).Gathered in the capital with Su Shi,the leader of Su'sSchool, and other fellows,Huang wrote a large number of passionate prose works andthe number of his prose works at that time excelled that of his poems for the first time. From the second year of Shao Sheng period to the forth year of Chong Ning period(1095—1105),Huang Tingjian was relegate to remote area of the country embroiledby the party confliction and reached the peak stature of his prose inditement. In thisperiod,Huang formed his deep understanding of the core of life and prose writing, and his style of being simple, steady and full of lingering charm. The prose works of Huang Tingjian enjoy their unique system. His representativeworks-three pieces of"Reply to Hong Jufu",enriched the prose theories in SongDynasty.Firstly,he regarded one's"heart and nature nourishing"as the key ofliterature inditement, and emphasized one's self-improvement and one's development of his ideal moral quality,he also believed that one should turn the external moralstandard into internal self-requirement.Secondly,Huang emphasized that one issupposed to study from his senior writers and form his own style at the same time.Thirdly,Huang highly valued the writer's language and put forward the principle of"turning the iron into gold"which means a writer should speak his own words insteadof the platitudes in his writings.Huang Tingjian also esteemed the innovation andartistic expression skills in prose writings. The style of being full of lingering charm characterizes the prose works of HuangTingjian. He emphasized the innovation as the core of prose writings and mixedConfucian classics, comments and the world's nature together in his works with theworld's nature as the key of them and wrote about the truth instead of the doctrines. At the same time,Huang valued the changes and unique ways of theme establishing, composition planning, character developing and passion expression in his writings. He planed the composition cautiously and treated the works as an organic whole fullof various expression skills.Huang is also famous for his beautiful language in hisworks with a number of metaphors, matching of both sound and sense in two linesand parallels, which offer the readers artistic pleasure.Huang Tingjian represents the most outstanding prose writer in later period of SongDynasty with his notable achievements in works of Fu(prose poems),preface andpostscript, miscellany, correspondence, tablet inscription, epigraph and his works onpersons' names, leaving a number of splendid works in Chinese history.
