Based on the theory of cognitive development , this dissertation discusses the development law of spatial category of Mandarin children. The corpus roots in the diary records on the language development of my daughter from 12 months old to 30 months old. The main body is divided into 5 chapters.Chapter 1 briefly reviews three influential theories of child acquisition, focuses on two viewpoints based on the theory of cognitive development: (1) The cognitive concepts are prerequisite to linguistic development, which leads to look for the developmental universals. (2)The language-specific spatial organization affects the way the child perceive and categorize the world, which tend to research the developmental particulars of child languageChapter II focuses on the development of spatial prepositions, proposes the sequence of morphological development, which shaped not only by the order of spatial concept, but also by the synchronic state. The semantic developmental principles and laws are as follows: (1)the prototype meaning is acquired earlier than the non-protype meaning; (2) the intrinsic frame of reference is acquired earlier than the relative frame of reference and the absolute frame of reference; (3) the language category is acquired earlier than language form.Chapter III examines the trends in the development of the spatial verb, establishes a developmental sequence of verb-framed and satellite-framed expression of motion events. The semantic development follows the laws: (1)the ego-reference is acquired earlier than nonego-reference; (2) the subjective reference is acquired earlier than the objective reference.Chapter IV deals with the development of 82 spatial verbs. After the description of their development of syntactic structure, the paper discusses the issue about the relation of language acquisition and the diachronic grammarization. As for the"verb island hypothesis", the author believes that the syntactic structure development of Mandarin children is not based on a single verb, but based on a certain degree of abstraction, but the abstraction is different from adults.Chapter V researches the sentences'development of"Zai""You""Shi", proposes that the semantic development are affected by development of the cognitive mechanisms of children, language expressions are influenced by the characteristics of Chinese.The main conclusion of this paper is: Children's Language Acquisition is a combined outcome affected by children's cognition and the national language input.
