The phenomenon of source monitoring has continued to attract the curiosity ofmore and more scientists ever since the term, source monitoring, was invented byJohnson,Hashtroudi and Lindsay in 1993,because it has brought memory researchesform laboratory to real life(Guo,1999).Source monitoring,a common phenomenon in real life, has also proved to be aresearch area of high ecological validity.Firstly, studies on source monitoring derivedwith the shift of memory research from scientific oriented approach to ecologicaloriented approach.Secondly, method innovation from direct paradigm to indirectparadigm in research area of source monitoring is aiming at modeling the naturalprocess of source monitoring better.Thirdly, some studies have already demonstrateda tight connection between three main characteristics of source monitoring, which arefrangibleness, apriority and non-automaticity,and many daily activities.Last but notleast, mechanism analysis of these characteristics can provide help for everyday life. Therefore, after describing the origin, development, characteristics and mechanism ofsource monitoring, the author pointed out that it is necessary to reveal the relationshipbetween characteristics of source monitoring and daily activities, the function rulesand underlying mechanism of these characteristics,in order to benefit our everydaylife.Experiment 1 found that compared to recognition, source monitoring seems to berelatively fragile even in the task of students' morality rating which is similar to somescenes in daily life, and this frangibleness definitely causes some false believe aboutthe students. Moreover, source monitoring performance covaries with recognitionperformance to a certain extent, which means all the method used to improverecognition can be adopted to prevent source error, and then reduce the probability offalse believe.Experiment 2 focused on an apriori tendency, picture preference, which is relatedto credibility of eyewitness testimony. As a result, picture preference turned out to bea prevalent tendency almost in every task, and it becomes more obvious when thetimes of learning increases. This output suggested decreasing the learning times formisinformation would avoid picture preference, and enhance reliability of eyewitnesstestimony consequently.Experiment 3 revealed that as founded in inadvertent plagiarism, source information still couldn't be encoded automatically in some classical sourcemonitoring paradigm, and source monitoring increasingly rely on conscious control asencoding strength goes up.This result indicated that non-automaticity of sourcemonitoring could be an important explanation for inadvertent plagiarism and the rulesabout non-automaticity of source monitoring changing with encoding strength couldprovide evidence for preventing inadvertent plagiarism.Based on experiment 1 to 3,experiment 4 and 5 intended to analyze the innermechanism under three characteristics of source monitoring.Experiment 4 testifiedthe hypothesis of dual-process mechanism which assumes different task involvesdifferent kind of processing by task dissociation approach, and showed a dissociationbetween heuristic and systematic processing at speed and functioning manner.Heuristic processing is relatively fast and in charge of explaining and attributingperceptual fluency below threshold, whereas systematic processing is slower andresponsible for semantic comprehension and reasoning.By process dissociation procedure, experiment 5 demonstrated that heuristic andsystematic processing could cooperate with each other even during one task, andcontribution from systematic processing increase dramatically with stimulus duration.Again, this conclusion confirmed that heuristic and systematic processing functionsdifferently. In all,it is reasonable to control three characteristic and their related dailyactivities by manipulating heuristic and systematic processing according to theirdifferent speed and working mode. Finally,in the general discussion, the author emphasized that source monitoringis a research area with high ecological validity,so that characteristics and mechanismanalysis of source monitoring will provide inspiration to real life.At the same time, the creativity of this thesis was concluded in perspective of the thesis title, theresearch method, the characteristics and mechanism of source monitoring andapplication of this study, and some possible future works in the area of sourcemonitoring were described, including a deeper investigation on relationship betweenthree characteristics and other daily activities, the competition between heuristic andsystematic processing.
