Research On Suzhou Poets Of Nanshe

Nanshe has a strong sense of regionalism and regional culture has a strong impact on Nanshe Literature. However, up to now, little importance has been attached to the research devoted to Nanshe. From the perspective of regional culture, this dissertation aims to probe Suzhou Culture's correlation to the activities of Nanshe poets and its contemporary significance by applying the combined approaches of cultural geography, social history and literary psychology. With this as illustration, the correlation between regional culture and Nanshe Literature, together with its inspiration,is observed.The main contents of this dissertation are divided into four c hapters.Chapter One, entitled Nanshe, Nanshe Research, Nanshe and Suzhou, mainly probes into the definition and significance of Nanshe, the status quo, achievements and deficiency of Nanshe research, and the indispensable correlation between Nanshe and Suzhou.The attribute of Nanshe, which embraces a profusion of different opinions, basically lies in culture. Taking into account the actual operation condition, this dissertation generally defines Nanshe as an advanced cultural consortium with a distinctive inclination to revolution which regards literature as its main cultural manifestations. And on this foundation, the concrete definition is given: Nanshe is a national literature consortium with a distinctive inclination to revolution and a southern cultural style.Nanshe ushered in a new road for culture and literature to participate in revolution in the Chinese history, thus acting as a precursor of the May 4th New Cultural Movement and literary revolution. Nanshe, which at that time inspired revolutionaries to overthrow the over two thousand-year-long feudal imperialism, is bound to inspire an overall renaissance for the Chinese culture. A great many members of Nanshe, with versatile talents and virtues, have set good examples to follow for those who are currently engaged in such fields as culture, education, literature and art.Nanshe research has undergone a wave-like development road, ranging from nil to being, from scarcity to density, from weakness to strength, and from individuality to collectivity. Since 1990's, Nanshe research has been in the golden period of overall development. Nanshe is currently an independent discipline.Nanshe is rich in regional culture colors with the Wu Culture's impact being the strongest. Suzhou Culture, a most outstanding representative of the Wu Culture, has a considerable influence on Nanshe. Yet, of all the thriving research on Nanshe, the systematic topic research from the perspective of Suzhou Culture is still vacantChapter Two, entitled Suzhou Poets of Nanshe Within Suzhou's Cultural Visual Field, threaded by"the problem line", attempts to resolve the following problems: the correlation between Suzhou culture and Suzhou Poets of Nanshe; the position and pattern of Suzhou Poets of Nanshe; the community characteristics of Suzhou Poets of Nanshe; the general characteristics of Suzhou poems of Nanshe.There exists a highly coherent correlation between Suzhou Culture and the poetic activities of Suzhou poets of Nanshe. Suzhou Culture is characterized by its diversity, its craving for both literacy and warrior, its beauty and elegancy, its suiting both refined and popular tastes, its combination of inheritance and creation. And in accordance with this, the poetic activities of Suzhou poets of Nanshe shares a similar character. Suzhou poets of Nanshe are not only the outcome of Suzhou Culture but also the reflectors and impellers of Suzhou Culture.Suzhou poets are the outstanding representatives of Nanshe poets due to the fact that they possess such aspects as quantity, quality, leaders and souls in the clusters of poets in Nanshe. They are an attractive existence not only in Nanshe poetic history and Suzhou poetic history, but also the Chinese contemporary and modern poetic history at large.The core problem of the entire poetic activities of Nanshe is that between politics and literature. From the perspective of poets, the core problem is the relationship concerning the double status of the poets, viz. national poets and recluse poets. While national poets are more apt to participate in political revolution and intervene actuality, hence their poems teem with positive and romantic heroic spirit, recluse poets, on the contrary, pay more attention to the free expression of their own disposition and temperament, eager for the perfect art of their poems. Of the double status, some of Suzhou poets of Nanshe primarily belong to the former, some the latter, some either the former or the latter now and then.Suzhou poets of Nanshe are usually erudite as far as familial knowledge and sinology are concerned. Their ardent love for their native land and country, together with traditional culture, is the internal motivation to participate in revolution. In term of economic foundation, their families are generally substantial and can be said to benefit from feudal system. Yet, they, duty-bound, throw themselves to revolution without any hesitation, which demonstrates their valuable moral integrity. Almost each of Suzhou poets of Nanshe is an eccentric and outstanding scholar featured by their sporadic arrogance and overcautiousness. In regard to the heavy responsibility Suzhou poets of Nanshe intend to take, their shoulders are still too delicate and fragile; in regard to the long way ahead, they, excluding a handful of poets such as Liu Yazi, cannot see that far and have a vague idea about the historical trend.Suzhou poems of Nanshe can be at least divided into two categories in terms of their topics and purposes, viz. poems with a strong inclination to revolution and poems with no obvious inclination to revolution. While the former is small in number, they represent the historic value of Suzhou poems of Nanshe. There are quite a few poems about beautiful scenery and romantic love, which mirrors the complexity of the development of revolutionary poems and also exemplifies the strong influence of Suzhou poetic history that boasts of thousands of years. Suzhou poems of Nanshe faithfully record the historical progress of old democratic revolution and the mental process of one entire generation of intelligentsia. Hence they are important historical data for studies on the contemporary and modern history of both Suzhou and China. Suzhou poems of Nanshe not only inherit the traditions of classic poetry but also innovate its own style belonging to"new poetry with old verse"characterized by the fact that vigor and robustness reside in grace and elegance, therefore, they are relatively easy to understand.Chapter Three, entitled Suzhou's Representative Poets of Nanshe, threaded by"the character line", selects Suzhou's representative poets of Nanshe and makes a specific analysis, thus providing the problems in Chapter Two with concrete exemplifications.According to the contribution and position of the poets in Nanshe, combining their revolutionary experience and social influence, referring to the thought contents, artistic features and quantities revealed by their sole organization publication of Nanshe Poetry Collection and regarding their representativeness of Suzhou's respective districts and counties, the author has selected nine most representative Suzhou poets to dwell on, namely, Liu Yazi, ChenQubing, Ye Chucong, Pang Shubai, who are political poets, and Zhu Liangren, Huang Ren, Hu Shiyu, Wang Dajue who are mainly scholar-type poets or poets without political affiliations.Chapter Four, entitled Suzhou Poets of Nanshe and Contemporary Poem Construction, mainly probes into the realistic value of Suzhou Poets of Nanshe and the issue of contemporary poetic construction.Many contemporary poets are for the most part indifferent to people's sufferings and social vicissitudes, thirsty for the narrow performance of self-centeredness; many of their poems lack the thickness of realism, the strength of heroism and the brightness of idealism. Since the national soul is closely linked to the poetic soul, a new revolution is called for in the circle of poetry so that both poets and their poems might regain their weight. Nanshe poems, Suzhou poems included, inherit and carry forward the excellent Chinese epic tradition of concerning the national fate and people's livelihood since the emerging of Book of Poetry, in distinctive contrast with contemporary poems which on the whole digress from enormous narration. Suzhou poems of Nanshe are not only a cluster of heroes who dare to shoulder the responsibilities for delivering the world from deterioration but also a cultural garden constructed by Suzhou Culture---a superb sample of Chinese culture. Due to many causes such as the long-term maladjustment of the education system, contemporary poets generally lack a profound knowledge of Chinese history and culture. It is also the gist of learning from Suzhou poets of Nanshe to rebuild up the depth of history and massiness of culture, to enhance the education of history and culture of national tradition and to cultivate one generation after another of scholar-type poets.Research achievements and original ideas mainly include the following six aspects:1. Regard"the outlook of value"as the connotation of"culture"and thus redefine the concept of"culture", whose interpretations have been diverse and inconsistent. The concept is: Culture is the outlook of value embodying itself both in spiritual manner and in behavioral manner and cohering to the material products and the non-material products.2. For the first time, this dissertation reveals the three aspects indicating the highly coherent correlation between Suzhou Culture and Suzhou poets of Nanshe: the mutual promotion in their creation and development, the mutual permeation in their content elements and the mutual similarity in their systematic characteristics.3. Make the brand-new comment of the unique position Suzhou Poets of Nanshe hold in the literary history of Nanshe, in the literary history of Suzhou and in the literary history of China: Suzhou poets of Nanshe have paved the way for spreading revolutionary ideology by means of poetry, acted as a precursor of modern transformation of Chinese poetry and put an end to the Chinese classic poem history.4. The dissertation offers the latest and original comments on Suzhou poets such as Ye Chucang, Yu Jianhua and Hu Shiyu poets who are virtually very important despite their having been snubbed or omitted from the former literary history.5. The dissertation is the first in the Nanshe academic circle to make a systematic and penetrating analysis of the correlation between regional culture and Nanshe Literature with Suzhou culture's correlation to the activities of Suzhou poets of Nanshe exemplifying it.6. Clarify the revelation of Suzhou poets of Nanshe to the contemporary poem construction.
