The Qiang ethnic group represents one of the oldest of China's 56 minorities. They have made extrodinary contributions to the nation's composition, development and maturing tradition. The Qiang minority has a long and continuous history, which has been preserved in both their rich material and non-material culture. The outside pays insufficiently close attention to the Qiang and little research has been devoted to their design culture partly because its scale is relatively small compared to the output of new China. In light of this current situation, the author makes great efforts to study the cultural ecology of ethnic Qiang design. To study ethnic Qiang design, the author has focused on three aspects: natural ecology, economic environment, and social life, which together have shaped the background of ethnic Qiang design. These study groups reveal that the designs of the ethnic Qiang contain extremely rich cultural connotations. Their various designs express an honest cultural viewpoint, which attaches importance to functionality and is a synthesis of the development of ethnic Qiang society in different historical periods, geographic conditions, modes of production, economic status, religiousness, aesthetic psychology, and unique customs and national character. The research also indicates that a peculiar design culture case is produced under the background of history and local geography, and it will apply and stretch to history, geography and other disciplines. There have been actively practical or immediate and historical significance to enrich our country's traditional culture, which will help us know the law of ethnic Qiang design, promoting their preservation and development. Finally, in this thesis the author discusses some contemporary issues concerning the designs of the ethnic Qiang including the promotion of handicrafts, the continuous development a national culture, and others. The author hopes that through these efforts, the designs of the ethnic Qiang will be better protected and further developed, while hastening the growth of ethnic Qiang tourism.
